All four mainland districts in Door County will likely unite to compete as a single co-op team in both boys and girls swimming events. At the upcoming Sturgeon Bay Board of Education meeting, a motion to approve the addition of Gibraltar to the co-op swimming team of Sturgeon Bay, Sevastopol, and Southern Door will be recommended. If the recommendation goes through, Door County will essentially stand as its own team against other state rivals. Korey Mallien, the athletic director at Southern Door, said he believes that Door County will become one of the few quad co-op teams in the state, if not the only one.
If approved by all school districts involved, the team will change its name to Door County name to reflect the new team’s coverage of nearly the entire county. Todd Meikle, the athletic director at Sturgeon Bay, said the name change reflects the coming together of all the mainland districts.
For Sturgeon Bay, there is no new board policy regarding coop sports teams to be reviewed as part of the change. The cooperative athletic document must be submitted to the WIAA by February 1st for the girls swim team, and by April 1st for the boys swim team. Mallien said both will be handled at the same time to reduce confusion.
