Phoenix pick up a pair of big wins

Both Phoenix basketball teams picked up wins Thursday night crucial to their seeding in the Horizon League Tournament.

In Indianapolis, defense was the story for the women's team as it won a hard-fought 45-43 game against IUPUI. Avenging a loss from earlier this season, the Phoenix held to the Jaguars to just 20 percent behind the arc and 33 percent overall from the field. The Jaguars defense was even stingier, outrebounding the Phoenix 43-24. Only six points total were scored in the final stanza, with  Jen Wellnitz finishing the night as Green Bay's top scorer with 13 points.

At the Resch Center in Green Bay, everything went right for the men in its 70-67 victory over Wright State. Sandy Cohen had a game-high 24 points with two others scoring in double figures for the Phoenix. The Phoenix survived an over two-minute scoring drought by playing tough defense on the final play, denying the Raiders' Bill Wambler a clean look at the hoop on the final play. A pair of losses in Michigan clinched a home tournament game for the Phoenix this Tuesday with one more game to go.
