Southern Door High School is following in the footsteps of other schools in expanding the number of outdoor sports activities available to students through clubs. According to Southern Door County Business Association President Roger Cherney it has been a grassroots movement.
This past fall, Luxemburg-Casco and Southern Door added fishing teams. L-C’s is focused more on competition and, come spring and summer, they’ll be participating in various sanctioned tournaments.
Cherney says Southern Door followed a different model set out by Sturgeon Bay High School when the Clippers created their own ice fishing club two years ago. Cherney has a nephew in that club and he used family conversations as the basis for how Southern Door’s club would be organized. Cherney was on-hand for the inaugural Southern Door Ice Fishing Tournament at Idlewild Golf Course along with Principal Steve Bousley. Not only was the event a success, one of the three teams participating was Sturgeon Bay so Southern Door could measure exactly how the Eagles stack up in their inaugural year.
Cherney and Bousley both want to add open water fishing to the club’s roster of events come the spring time. Then they can begin focusing on competitive results. Over 20 students are part of the club this year.
