K/D Salmon Tournament enters final weekend

A day after strong winds kept most boaters off the water, two of the top three fish in the 40th annual K/D Salmon Tournament were reeled in Thursday and registered at Baileys Harbor: Josh Johnson’s new leader at 32.58 pounds, and Chuck Wagner’s 31.62-pounder.

From Washington Island to Kewaunee, 37 20-pound-plus Chinooks were put to official scales, bringing the seven-day total to nearly 300. The top 100 fish are all 24-1/2 pounds and up, an impressive showing. There have already been more trophy “kings” registered in off Door and Kewaunee counties than were weighed in the entire lakewide Salmon-A-Rama that ended Sunday, a nine-day event with 11 registration stations in Wisconsin, Michigan and Illinois.

Tickets for the K/D are still available at all locations. Cost is $20 for a one-day chance or $30 for the remainder of the event, which ends at noon Sunday. No need for a waiting period after a ticket is purchased, but you must purchase before fishing. All fishing must be done in Wisconsin waters off of Door or Kewaunee counties, and everyone age 10 and up in a boat must have a ticket.

Tickets are available at B&K Bait and Tackle at Kap’s Marina on Washington Island; Baileys 57 in Baileys Harbor; JP Express north of Carlsville; Howie’s Tackle & Archery and Greystone Castle. both in Sturgeon Bay; Algoma BP and JP Express in Algoma; and Yacht Works Kewaunee (formerly Salmon Harbor) and Center Court BP in Kewaunee.

All tickets include a random draw chance for a 9.9 horsepower Yamaha outboard motor from Shipyard Island Marina. One winner will be chosen at the K/D wrap-up meeting July 26.
