Phoenix women clinch title, men lose lead late

A Thursday night doubleheader had mixed results for fans of the Green Bay Phoenix basketball programs.

In the first game, the Lady Phoenix pulled away late in a 64-49 victory over Cleveland State to clinch their first conference title since the 2017-2018 season. After trading leads for much of the first three quarters, the Phoenix outscored the Vikings 19-6 in the fourth quarter to record their 21st conference championship in school history. Natalie McNeal led the way with 16 points off the bench while Bailey Butler (11 points), Sydney Levy (10 points), and Jasmine Kondrakiewicz (10 points) also reached double figures.

Another scoreless run in the second half doomed the Phoenix men in a 76-65 loss to Cleveland State. Leading by four heading into the break, the Phoenix were held scoreless for six minutes midway through the second half to spoil another good effort under its interim coach. Davin Zeigler led the way with 14 points while Zae Blake and Clarence Cummings III  chipped in 11 points apiece.

Another doubleheader for the Phoenix programs begins at 1 p.m. when the girls host IPFW with the men battling the Mastodons as well at 4 p.m.
