In a game that neither team truly had any control in, it was Maplewood’s Zach Marchant who put the game to rest in walk-off fashion as the Mets beat the Islanders 4-3 on 105.1 The GOAT.
Washington Island got the scoring going very early as the third batter Luke Geiger turned on a fastball and drove a two-run home run out to left center field to give Washington Island a quick 2-0 lead. Ryan Jorgenson began the game out strong, as he commanded his off speed pitches to retire Maplewood early and often.
The Mets would then respond with two runs of their own in the third inning after a walk and a hit by pitch charged against Ryan Jorgenson evened the game up 2-2. Jeremiah Jahnke would begin to find his groove as well, as the matchup between the Islanders and the Mets would turn into a pitcher's duel.
Washington Island was able to manufacture a run in the top of the fifth inning, as Ryan Jorgenson was brought home on a Luke Geiger RBI single. Geiger was responsible for all three of the Islanders runs, having a 3 for 4 day.
Both teams would be quiet until the eighth inning, when Adam Gutschow sailed a lead-off home run deep into left field, to even the game at 3. Will Jandrin would come in to shut down the eighth and ninth inning, setting up a walk-off opportunity for Maplewood.
Zach Marchant started off the inning, and wasted no time sending a fastball into left-center field, just past the leaping glove of centerfielder Ben Geiger, to send Maplewood home with an upset win 4-3.
