Tjernagel named Clippers girls' basketball coach

With just a couple of weeks before the first practice, Sturgeon Bay High School is going to the district office to fill its girls' basketball head coach position.

Sturgeon Bay District Administrator Dan Tjernagel was named the girls' head varsity coach at Wednesday's district board meeting. Tjernagel is not a stranger to the hardwood, not only as a coach but as a player. He has coached at the youth level in recent years and at the high school level during other stops in his work history. In 2017, he was named to the Wisconsin Lutheran College Hall of Fame after a career that saw him set the school's all-time scoring record after he poured in a school-record 647 points. According to the athletic department's website, he left the program as the school's fifth all-time scorer. In a corresponding move, Mark Felhofer was named his assistant coach.

The move was needed after last year's varsity coach, Casey Harrington, resigned.

Tjernagel becomes the second district administrator to take on a head coaching role this school year after it was announced that Kyle Luedtke would head up the Sevastopol boys' basketball program. It is also part of the coaching carousel that occurred this offseason with head coaching changes for the Gibraltar girls and Luxemburg-Casco boys and girls programs.
