Phoenix open Cancun Challenge play Thursday

The Green Bay Phoenix women's basketball team is celebrating Thanksgiving south of the border this year as they open Cancun Challenge play on Thursday.

The Phoenix opened their six-game road trip with an extra dose of confidence moving forward as they beat #22 Creighton 65-53. The Phoenix set the tone against the Big East power early, outscoring them 22-9 in the game's opening stanza. A 17-0 run to end the first quarter and a 10-2 run to finish the second quarter gave the Phoenix a nine-point lead at the break. The Blue Jays would get to within four points late in the game, but the Phoenix knocked down free throws when it mattered to secure the upset.

Their first matchup is against UMass, which has opened its season with losses against Harvard, Monmouth, and Maine. The Phoenix will play Maryland on Friday and #23 Washington State on Saturday in Cancun. Thursday's game begins at 12:30 p.m.
