The Green Bay Phoenix women's basketball team passed the first test of its Cancun Challenge with ease on Thursday, getting past UMass 85-52.
The Phoenix scored over 20 points in three of the four quarters, shooting over 51 percent from the field on the day including 41 percent from behind the arc. A 9-0 run to begin the game made the rest of the game academic as they were able to easily stretch the game from there.
Luxemburg-Casco product Cassie Schiltz led all Phoenix players with 16 points while Natalie McNeal (14 points) and Maren Westin (13 points) also cracked double figures.
The Phoenix will likely face a tougher task on Friday when they face Big 10 opponent Maryland. The Terrapins had been in the Top 25 as recently as last week, but losses to top-ranked South Carolina and sixth-ranked Connecticut knocked them out. They lost to #22 Washington State 87-67 in their Cancun Challenge opener. Tip-off is set for 12:30 p.m.
