Green Bay cross country team takes performance factor battle to Madison

A Green Bay-area cross country team took its grievances right to legislators this week as they continue to rail against the WIAA Performance Factor criteria.

Led by their coach and former Wisconsin Assembly Speaker John Gard, members of the Green Bay Notre Dame cross country team testified in front of the in front of the Assembly Education committee at the State Capitol in Madison about Assembly Bill 1034, which relates to participation in interscholastic athletics and application of the public records and open meeting laws to interscholastic athletic associations. According to Scott Venci of the Green Bay Press-Gazette, three coaches from different parts of the state also participated in the hearing. The goal is to eliminate the performance factor criteria from cross country, which uses past success to elevate teams from lower divisions to higher ones. As a result, Notre Dame saw its cross-country teams get elevated to Division 1.

No teams from Door or Kewaunee counties were switched to different divisions after the fall season, but that streak will likely end there. The Luxemburg-Casco wrestling team will likely be moved to Division 1 next season regardless of how Saturday's Team State Wrestling Tournament goes.
