By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
May 16, 2008

The opening round of the regional softball tournament began yesterday and Door and Kewaunee County teams fared extremely well. In Division 2, Sturgeon Bay trounced Two Rivers 13-2 in five innings. Senior pitcher Amy Ziegelbauer allowed two hits in the game, thanks to stellar defense behind her. Ziegelbauer finished with five strikeouts. The Sturgeon Bay offense accumulated 13 hits and benefited from five Two Rivers errors. The seniors did the heavy lifting yesterday with Heather Schmitt and Sarah McCaulley leading the way with three hits apiece. Sara Watermolen, Mary Knipfer and Allie Lauder had two hits in the game. Sturgeon Bay will make the short trip to Southern Door on Tuesday to take on the Packerland Conference champs.

Luxemburg-Casco moved past Valders 4-0 behind the arm of sophomore Kalli Schmelzer who struck out five Valders batters. The Spartans had a scare in the fifth inning when Schmelzer pitched her way out of a bases-loaded jam that could have given the Vikings the lead at that point. L-C will travel to Denmark for a second round game on Tuesday.

In Division 3, Algoma dominated Reedsville 7-0. Error free ball was the key to the Wolves victory. Junior pitcher Lyndsay Swoboda had nine strikeouts for Algoma. Kayla Major and Sam Zastrow led the offensive surge for the Wolves. Algoma will host Manitowoc Roncalli in a second round matchup on Tuesday.

Sevastopol had an equally impressive outing against Kewaunee. The Pioneers plated five runs in the first two innings en route to a 9-1 win. Sevastopol senior Carissa Neinas pitched a one-hitter and struck out five. The Pioneers will host Mishicot on Tuesday afternoon.

Division 4 high school softball had Gibraltar over Marinette St. Thomas 3-1. Allison Pfeifer threw a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts. The Vikings will travel to Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah for a second round matchup on Tuesday.

Packerland Conference baseball featured a cross-county rivalry game between Southern Door and Sturgeon Bay. The Eagles took advantage of playing at home and won a nail biter 3-2. Senior pitcher Michael Blizel gave up to runs in the second inning but recovered and did not allow a single hit after that point. With the Eagles trailing by two runs they started to chip away at the lead, scoring one run in the third, fourth and fifth innings, Troy Jorgenson was the pitcher of record for Sturgeon Bay.

The other cross-county rivalry took place between Sevastopol and Gibraltar. This game also ended 3-2 with the Pioneers earning a come from behind victory. The Pioneers were shutout for the first six innings but managed to put three runs on the board in the seventh. Kirk Schleicher's double delivered the knockout punch for Sevastopol. Sam Forkert homered in the bottom of the seventh for the Vikings, to bring the game within one run. Owen Hubner was the winner and Alex Larsen took the loss on the hill.

Algoma crushed NEW Lutheran 16-3 in five innings. Craig Kirchman struck out eight and was the winning pitcher and Max Grothman picked up the loss. Parker Erdmann, Jake Koss, and Brett Beckmann had two hits a piece for Algoma

Oconto was nearly upset by Kewaunee yesterday but weathered the storm and held on to a 5-4 victory. Tanner Ledvina homered and Jerry Charles, Doug Delebreau and Brandon Radke all had multi-hit games for Kewaunee. The losing pitcher was Tim Struck. He had six strikeouts against the Blue Devils.

In Bay Conference baseball, West De Pere outslugged Luxemburg-Casco 6-4. The Phantoms continued to have the upper hand in this matchup. West De Pere has had L-C's number in baseball for four years in a row now. Sean Glinski was the losing pitcher for the Spartans. Matt Jadin and Brandon Jacobs had multi-hit games for the Spartans.

"Hit and Run" With Jocko Rader
By Jocko Rader Door County Baseball League
May 16, 2008

The Door County League had a lot of fireworks on the opening weekend.  The hitters had a field day as the pitchers were showing a little rust from the winter months.  Maplewood winning 24 to 9, Institute over egg harbor 17 to 6, and Kolberg over west Jacksonport 11 to seven.  We had one close game and that was a thriller on the Island 4 to 3 Islanders, with Jack Rose saving the day with an outstanding catch in left field along the left field fence with a catch on his knees.  Brett Anschutz the victim of a well hit ball.  We had an outstanding play by Alex Higgenbotom of Sister Day at short going deep in the whole and getting the runner at first. Major league play.  Jeff Sperber went way back on a looping fly ball in left in the later innings to save a run. Great play.  Players with over two hits on Sunday. We had Ryan Tanck with three, Greg Klaubaugh with three, Chris Wery and Bob Tenor with four, and Jesse Miller with three. Jason Shimon had three, as did John Price. Aaron Delorit a new comer on the Island team had four hits. Andy Schartner had three hits, as did the Cubs outstanding shortstop, Corey Fuller.  Three for Jason Annis, also.  Quite a few hitters had two hits, so as you can tell it was a hitter’s day.  Winning pitchers, we had Kit Schartner, for the Cubs, Jason Shimon for the Mets, Matt Ash for the Islanders, and Adam Bretl for the Braves.
Now for this week's games.  Institute at Sister Bay.  Jake Peterson, who was married last week, will be back this week.  Clark Erickson looks like he may have a pitching problem this year.  The Cubs should win this one, but Sister Bay can hit so watch out.  However, I have to go with the cubs in a close win. West Jacksonport goes to the Island and this is a dangerous game for them.  They cannot afford two losses early in the season and the Island has picked up another bat in Arron Delorit.  John Sawyer the catcher for Baileys Harbor had this to say, "We tried pitching him high, low and outside and he hit everything."  Will Stewart Larson be back for the Ports? This week and will Ryan Tanck get back on track pitching wise? I will go with the Ports in a close one.  Kolberg at Baileys Harbor Kolberg scored 11 runs and baileys three in the first game of the year.  The Harbor will have a had time against the pitcher of the year in 2007 in Adam Bretl.  Brett Anschutz has beaten Kolberg in the last two years and if his curve ball is on, he is one of the best and tough to beat.  I will go with Kolberg, however to win in a close one.  Baileys Harbor will miss the voice of the Harbor in John Becker as we all do in the league.  He was great for baseball and the county league.  All will miss him.  Can the Harbor win this game for J.B.? Yes, they could.  The last game for the fearless predictor is Egg Harbor at Maplewood.  Jeff Sperber's team won the first game for its new manager, with Jeff taking over for Pete Wickman. His team gave him 24 runs and an easy win.  This one will be closer then you may think as the Egg Harbor team always gives Maplewood a battle.  Robbie Schartner has been getting some extra practice this week.  Will it be Sperber or Shimon this week?  Sperber is my choice, with Shimon back at first and Jason Piechett at shortstop.   Well that's it for this week.  I hope you all get a chance to take in a game this week and enjoy the team of your choice.  County league ball is great to watch and meet some of your old friends you probably have not seen since last season.

Southern Door will host Manitowoc Roncalli tonight at Southern Door Field.
Pat Delcore and the Eagles softball team clinched another Packerland Conference Championship last week with a win over Oconto. The team is dominated with experienced juniors that are hungry for a state championship after falling in the finals last year. The team is (15-2) overall and (12-2) in conference play. Pitcher Courtney Wautier is closing in on her 500th career strikeout and could break a number of pitching records in her senior season. Algoma and Southern Door locked up in a classic pitcher's dual yesterday. Lyndsay Swoboda led the Wolves in a 2-1 ball game in Algoma. Swoboda allowed four hits and struck out six. Courtney Wautier also struck out six in the game but was charged with the loss. The Eagles remain a game ahead of Algoma in the conference standings.

Sevastopol earned a 6-4 win over Kewaunee, despite Kewaunee's Heather Bloniarz striking out 14 in the loss. Sevastopol got a lift from Brittany Jilot in the fifth inning when she belted a bases-clearing triple to give the Pioneers the lead. Oconto shut out Gibraltar 7-0. Pitching dominance by Oconto's Natalie Ruechel was the story in this game. She threw a no-hitter with 13 strikeouts and kept the Blue Devils in a tie with Algoma for second place in the conference.

High School Baseball A Hot Attraction This Spring
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
May 10, 2008

Southern Door baseball extended their winning streak yesterday with a 5-3 win over Kewaunee. Kyle Ploor was the pitcher of record for the Eagles. After an amazing day at the plate Thursday, John Heimbecker earned the save on the mound yesterday. A three-run home run in the fifth inning by Josh Alexander was all the offensive insurance Southern Door would need in this one. The win keeps them one game behind the front running Algoma Wolves and Oconto Blue Devils.

Sturgeon Bay had a chance to control their own destiny, had they won out, however, the Clippers fell to Algoma 6-2. Craig Kirchman led the Wolves with a 3-for-3 day at the plate, including a home run, a triple and a double. He finished with five RBIs. Parker Erdmann, Kirk Rodrian, and Matt Swoboda each belted two hit for the Wolves. Jake Lebotte was the winning pitcher and Troy Jorgensen was the losing pitcher.

Gibraltar earned a 3-1 victory over NEW Lutheran to cap an emotional week for the team. After beating Algoma Thursday, the bats quieted substantially. After giving up twice as many hits as they could garner, the team some how gutted out the victory. Sam Ausloos had the only two hits of the game for the Vikings and scored two runs. Sam Forkert earned the win on the mound.

Sevastopol locked up with Oconto in a competitive matchup. The Blue Devils would not fall for the second time in as many days and saved a 6-2 victory. Owen Hubner was charged with the loss but did lead the team with two hits on the day.
