Sail Past Spartans In Regional Playoffs
By
Nick Freimuth
DoorCountyDailyNews.com
May 23,
2008Sturgeon Bay
dominated the hit column in a 7-3 win over Luxemburg-Casco in a
WIAA Division 2 baseball regional quarterfinal yesterday. Senior
pitcher Troy Jorgensen struck out nine Spartan batters in an
upset at the Luxemburg-Casco Sports Complex. It was the first
time L-C had lost to Sturgeon Bay in regional play for five
years. Sturgeon Bay Coach Matt Propsom said the Spartan curse
had lifted from his program. It was a long run of domination for
L-C in the series.
Sturgeon Bay was led by three hits from Simon Rabas and Jake
Miller. Sean Glinske was the losing pitcher.
The Clippers were the only team from the Packerland Conference
to have any success on the diamond yesterday. Mishicot crushed
Sevastopol 12-6 at West Jacksonport. The four Vs. five matchup
soured in the seventh inning for the Pioneers. They gave up six
runs on four hits to Mishicot. The Pioneers' Owen Huebner hit a
solo home run but was the losing pitcher.
Kewaunee also ended their season at home in Division 3 regional
play. Manitowoc Roncalli was a 4-3 winner. A three run first
inning was too much for Kewaunee to overcome. Alex Delebreau was
the losing pitcher. He managed five strikeouts in the game. |

By
Nick Freimuth
DoorCountyDailyNews.com
May 23,
2008In WIAA Division 2
regional final softball in Brussels yesterday, the Southern Door
Eagles earned a 6-2 victory over Denmark in seven innings.
Junior pitcher Courtney Wautier
struck out ten batters. That put
her exactly at the magic number for career strikeouts (500). The
Eagle's pitcher struck out the number nine batter in the top of
the seventh inning to put her at an even 500 in front of a
standing ovation from the home crowd.
It was a 2-0 Southern Door lead before the hit parade began in
the fifth inning. Denmark senior catcher Colette Ullmer belted a
two RBI triple into the right field corner to tie the game.
In the bottom half of the inning, Southern Door plated three
runs. Kate Klaubof hit an RBI single followed by a two RBI
single by Liz Neuman to break the game open. The Eagles
held their 5-2 lead until the bottom of the sixth when Southern
Door senior Jackie Lardinois, on her 18th birthday, hit her first
career home run over the fence in dead center field. The solo
shot made it a 6-2 ball game and the Eagles would cruise to
another regional championship after that.
The win sets up a matchup in Chilton on Thursday between two
number one seeds. The Eagles will face Freedom at 1:30 p.m. The
Irish defeated Little Chute 2-0 in their regional final game.
Southern Door and Freedom will be heard on 104.1 FM WRLU,
Thursday. Our pre-game coverage will begin at 1:00 p.m. It the
Eagles make the sectional finals, we will broadcast that game
beginning at 4:00 p.m. Winneconne of Oconto Falls awaits the
winner of the Southern Door/Freedom sectional semi-final.
The defending state champion Sevastopol Pioneers upset Algoma at
home 10-7 in seven innings. Sevastopol will play
Iola-Scandinavia in Algoma for the sectional semi-final on
Thursday. The game will begin at 3:00 p.m. Lyndsay Swoboda was

By

May 23,
2008To help bolster a
thin group of tightends, the Green Bay Packers announced
yesterday that they have signed rookie free agent Evan Moore.
General Manager Ted Thompson made the move after the first week
of OTA's.
A 6-foot-6, 237-pound player, Moore was a four-year letterman at
wide receiver while at Stanford. He finished his collegiate
career in 2007 with 103 receptions for 1,555 yards and 12
touchdowns. Moore will wear No. 8 with the Packers. |

Players To
Watch During Packers' OTA's
By
Nick Freimuth
DoorCountyDailyNews.com
May 22,
2008The Sports Page was
held last night at the Ladder House in downtown Sturgeon Bay.
The show was completely devoted to the Packers, Brewers and
Bucks. Owner of Witt Ford Joe Witt joined me to discuss hot
topics in the Wisconsin sports scene.
Organized Team Activities or OTA's began for the Green Bay
Packers yesterday at the Don Hudson Center. The practice was
originally scheduled to be conducted at the outdoor facility
called Ray Nitchke Field, but Head Coach Mike McCarthy decided
to move things indoors. For the first time in recent memory, the
general public was allowed to watch the practice from the
sidelines at the Hudson Center.
Joe Witt and I talked about a few players that fans should watch
this offseason.
Fans wanted to catch a glimpse of their new quarterback. Aaron
Rodgers looked great after his first day leading the reigning
NFC North Champs. He gained ten pounds of muscle in the
offseason and was throwing with a little more zip than ever
before. Two throws in particular stood out. The first was a
60-yard bomb down the sideline to Greg Jennings. The ball was a
perfectly thrown spiral that hit the third year receiver in
stride.
The second lights out throw Rodgers made was a simple seven-yard
crossing route to the sure handed Donald Lee. Rodgers reared
back and threw a Brett Favre fastball that went through Lee's
hands, hit his chest and bounced to the ground. That ball had
some smoke on it!
Joe Witt pinpointed second year running back Brandon Jackson as
a player to watch. He had an extra burst on the practice field
yesterday and made some sharp cuts at the line of scrimmage,
which is a necessity when running in the zone-blocking scheme.
The final player talked about last night as a player to watch
was free agent linebacker Brandon Chillar. He will be competing
with Brady Poppinga for the starting strong side linebacker. He
brings much needed speed to the position and will be a better
cover man when the SAM linebacker needs to cover a tight end or
a running back in a passing situation. |

in the first five innings and kept her team in the ball game
late. She struck out two in seven innings of work.
Courtney Wautier struck out eight and moved to 490 career

in the game. Natalie LaCrosse was 3 for 3, Kristi Villers was 2

In Denmark, the Vikings handed Luxemburg-Casco a season ending
loss 7-0. Lauren Roberts pitched the shutout for Denmark who

Swoboda and Shana Vandertie had three hits a piece to lead
Algoma. Swoboda struck out eight on the mound and earned the win

Packers
Family Night Announced
By
Nick Freimuth
DoorCountyDailyNews.com
May 19,
2008The Green Bay Packers
today announced that ‘Packers Family Night will take place
Sunday evening, Aug. 3.
‘Family Night,’ now in its eighth year, will feature an
intra-squad scrimmage between the Packers’ offense and defense.
Evening activities get underway in the stadium at 5:30 p.m.,
followed by on-field football drills at 6:30 and the scrimmage
at approximately 7:30.
This year’s edition lands on a Sunday night for the first time.
With the team opening the preseason on a Monday night (Aug. 11),
the entire training camp schedule had to be adjusted, beginning
with the first practice, Monday, July 28.
“We’re very excited to be preparing for ‘Packers Family Night, ’
” said Packers President/CEO Mark Murphy. “It’s another one of
the great training camp traditions of the Green Bay Packers.
Even with the change, it promises to be another memorable night
for our fans, and I’m looking forward to seeing it for the first
time. I’ve already heard a lot of great things about the event,
both from our staff and our fans.”
Included in the evening’s activities, per custom, will be the
popular “Shirts Off Our Backs,” with approximately 20 jerseys –
all of which will have been worn by Packers players in the
just-completed scrimmage – to be given away in a random drawing,
other entertainment and a spectacular fireworks show to conclude
the night.
The NFL’s most popular scrimmage, the event has drawn more than
60,000 fans the past four seasons as the Packers sold every
available seat.
Tickets, priced again at $8, will go on sale Saturday, June 14,
at 10 a.m., through Ticketmaster and may be purchased either in
person, over the phone or via the Internet. A limit of eight
tickets per purchase will be in place for an initial sales
period to allow more fans to have the chance to make a
transaction.
Parking for the event will be $5, with net proceeds to be
donated to ‘Packers Family Night’ partner Wendy’s Wonderful Kids
foster care adoption program, a signature program of the Dave
Thomas Foundation for Adoption. Volunteers for the group also
will be in the parking lot and at the gates to share information
about the program with fans and accept monetary donations.
The entire training camp schedule is expected to be announced by
the end of the month. |

By
Nick Freimuth
DoorCountyDailyNews.com
May 19,
2008The smallmouth bass
in Sturgeon Bay and throughout Door County are bigger than ever.
A record weight was registered for the Sturgeon Bay Open Bass
Tournament that concluded yesterday. Bill Godin (Develin,
Ontario) and Mike Salvador (Sioux Naiirows, Ontario) registered
a two-day total of 56.77 pounds of bass caught on Saturday and
Sunday. This was the first time Salvador has ever won a bass
tournament. Godin has won tournaments
before.
He talked about the winning combination.
(Audio Here)
Salvador said the first place prize would make the drive back to
Ontario a little better.
(Audio Here)
Godin owns a fishing and hunting resort in Canada and fishes ten
major tournaments a year. The biggest fish caught by the winning
team was around five pounds. They said everything they kept was
at leas a decent four-pound fish.
The biggest bass was caught on Saturday and weighed 6.49 pounds.
(Also a record)
The top ten was filled with out-of towners. Sturgeon Bay's Troy
Hartl finished in the top 15
in his second year fishing the tourney. He said a lot of
pre-fishing needs to take place and a little luck too.
(Audio Here)
Owner of Gary's Guide Service in Sturgeon Bay, Gary Nault,
described why local anglers
rarely win the tournament.

DoorCountyDailyNews.com
May 17,
2008In non-conference
baseball action yesterday Algoma defeated Manitowoc Lutheran 6-5
in a close game. It was a back and forth battle. Manitowoc
scored 3 in the fourth inning, Algoma then scored 4. Manitowoc

in the seventh to win the game. Eric Aackerman was the winning

Sevastopol won one and tied one in a double header against
Marinette St. Thomas yesterday. While Marinette scored runs
consistently throughout game 1, so did the Pioneers. A two run
homer from Sevastopl's Joe Sawyer earned them the win. In game
1, Kyle Volkman pitched and had 6 K's. He was also 2x4 on
offense. Game 2 was called after 5 innings due to darkness. The
final at that point was 5-5.
The bats were hot for Kewaunee yesterday, they beat Mishicot

Delebreau who were both 3x3 and Tanner Ledvina 2x4. Jerry
Charles pitched for Kewaunee.

Weather Huge
Factor For Open Bass Tourney
By
Karyn Klement
DoorCountyDailyNews.com
May 17,
2008
In the Sturgeon Bay Open Bass ProAm Tournament yesterday, I had
the opportunity to fish with Gary Nault from Gary's Guide
Service in Sturgeon Bay. Things got started shortly after 7:00AM
yesterday. The bass were biting early and Gary's long time
fishing partner Jerry Adrians hooked eight right away. The
heaviest weighed in at 3.14 lbs. The ProAm
tourney is all about pro's sharing their knowledge and
experience with the amateurs. I learned that weather has a lot
to do with fishing. While the morning bite was pretty good, the
wind died down in the afternoon making in nearly impossible to
catch any more bass. Shortly before the end of the tournament,
the chop picked back up and we were able to catch a few more
fish. I caught a total of two fish yesterday but both were too
small to save for the weigh-in.
Top finishers in the Open Bass ProAm Tournament for the pro's
were Phil Riddle with a 5.3 lbs. bass, Jonathon Meacham with
4.89 lbs. and Chris Plazak 4.82lbs. For the amateurs it was
Damir Magle with a 5.63 lbs. bass (that was heavier than the top
pro), Lisa Washa with 4.68 lbs. and Sturgeon Bay High School
Senior Kyle Trelka with 4.54 lbs. All top three finishers were
from Sturgeon Bay. While I did not place in this year's ProAm
tourney, at least I caught some fish.
Anglers will be out fishing Door County waters for the Open Bass
Tournament today and tomorrow. 200 boats will be out trying
their luck this weekend, many from out-of-town. Final weigh-in
will be 2:00PM tomorrow. A special thanks to Gary Nault from
Gary's Guide Service and his fishing partner Jerry Adrians for
showing me the ropes at yesterday's ProAm. |
