The Southern Door Eagles softball team
repeated as sectional champions yesterday after consecutive 1-0
victories over Freedom and Oconto Falls. The day began at 1:00
p.m. in Chilton with a great pitchers dual. The most impressive
changeup pitcher, Southern Door has faced all season Jamie Schuh
allowed just three hits and stuck out 12 but gave up one costly
run in the fourth inning.
Southern Door scored on an RBI triple by Kate Klauboff. Karlee
Vandertie scored from first on the play. It would hold up as the
only scoring play in the game. Courtney Wautier finished with
seven strikeouts in the sectional semi-final game.
After an hour break, the Eagles were right back on the diamond.
Representing the Bay Conference, Oconto Falls sent Paige
Surprise to the pitchers circle. The tremendous right-hander
struck out three after a no-hitter against Winneconne in the
semi-final.
Courtney Wautier threw one of her best games. She struck out 13
and allowed just one hit. The game seemed like deja vu, because
the lone run scored in the 1-0 final was an RBI single by Kate
Klauboff that scored Karlee Vandertie. The win sets up a state
appearance for the second consecutive season for the Eagles.
On Friday, June 6, at 6 p.m. Southern Door will face New Berlin
Eisenhower in Madison. The game will be broadcast on 104.1 FM
WRLU.
A big thank you to Southern Door Athletic Director Luke Goral
for providing the color commentary for both games in Chilton
yesterday. Also, thank you to Dale Swanson for the fabulous work
he has done with photography following the Eagles this season.

Rader 10-2 In
Door County Baseball League Predictions
By
Jocko Rader
DoorCountyDailyNews.com
May 30,
2008After three weeks we have only one team with a
(3-0) record and that being last years champ Kolberg. The Cubs
beat sister bay 9 to 0 on a one hitter by Kit Schartner. West
Jacksonport behind the pitching and hitting of Ryan Tanck took
care of Baileys Harbor by a score of 15 to 4. Tanck had a grand
slam home run in this one. Kolberg over The Island 10 to 1. Adam
Bretl the winning pitcher here. Maplewood took care of the
Institute team in a squeaker with manager Jeff Sperber hitting a
three run homer in the eight to win the came behind victory. Egg
Harbor behind Robbie Schartner beat Sister Bay in a good game 5
to
2. Only seven home runs hit this week after 17 the week before.
Top hitters this week; Caleb Cornell and Matee Foss had three
hits for the Islanders, for Kolberg we had Travis Leroy and
Jesse Miller with three hits. Miller a three run homer. Kyle
Thayse was on base five out of five times in the Mets game and
he had three hits. three hits for Stuart Larson and Steve Jolot
three hits for Jacksonport. Jilot and Larson with home runs
also. These were your top hitters this week. pitching is
starting to come around a little. Now for this weeks games.
Institute is traveling to the league leading Kolberg brave team.
I understand they could be without Corey Fuller for four weeks
and this is not good news for the Cub fans.
Kolberg has a potent lineup and guys on the bench that could
start elsewhere. Kit Schartner had a one hitter two week ago.
Can he come up with a performance like that again. I doubt it
against this team. my pick the Braves. Maplewood takes on West
Jacksonport this week and these teams have had some battle in
the last five years. they usually spilt games, so with the Mets
at the sports, I have to go with Ryan Tanck and his hard hitting
port team. Egg Harbor is going to The Island this week and I was
impressed with the Islands hitters. They are a tough crew to
hold down and I believe with the addition of Aaron Delorit..
They are
a tough team to beat. I would like to see Lenny Atkins in the
leadoff spot. I want this guy up as much as possible. Egg Harbor
is a surprise team I believe with the loss of Matt Bley and Jack
Schartner, I thought they may have some rough going. However the
replacements are doing just fine. My pick Islanders at home.
Sister Bay at Baileys Harbor. Both teams are 0 and 3 and need a
win very bad. Going 0 and 4 this early would make it awful had
to make the playoff run this early in the season. Its manager
Buck Honold versus newly crowned hall of famer Clark Erickson.
Both teams are looking for some better pitching that, is must
for both teams to start winning. Who has the better hitting
team. I think they are about even here. I have a tough one to
pick here. Time out for a coffee break. I am back and the pick
is Sister Bay. Sorry Buck. Well that's it for this week. My
record is now 10 and 2. Can I improve on that? Only game day
will tell. See you at the game! |

Gary Nault Wants Your Big Catch Photos
By
Nick Freimuth
DoorCountyDailyNews.com
May 29,
2008Gary Nault of Gary's Guide Service was my local
sports guest last night on the Sports Page. We broadcast every
Wednesday from 5:30-7:00 p.m. Gary encouraged Door and Kewaunee
County's anglers to start sending us your photos of big catches.
Nault provides the daily fishing reports at 6 AM, noon and 5 PM
on the radio station of DoorCountyDailyNews.com.
He told anglers last night that salmon fishing is already
warming up in Algoma and he would not be surprised if the
species is biting on the bank reef in Sturgeon Bay. Flies and
Dodgers are being used in Algoma and working well, said Nault.
The fishing guide also said that smallmouth bass, perch,
northern and walleye are all biting with good regularity
throughout the county. Fishing in all areas of Green Bay has
been getting better with the water temperatures on the rise.

Felhofer
Scores Four Goals In State Cup Soccer
By
Nick Freimuth
DoorCountyDailyNews.com
May 24,
2008Sturgeon Bay High
School standout soccer player Nate Felhofer scored three first
half goals this weekend to lead his tournament team to the
semi-finals in theU16 Boys Spring US Youth Soccer Wisconsin
State Championships. Group Play for U16 Boys will take place on
May 31, 2008 and June 1, 2008 at USA Park in Appleton.
Fellhofer belongs to the United Soccer Club of Allouez and the
team Door County United played in Division A over the weekend in
Racine. There were four divisions comprised of four teams. Each
of the sixteen teams played three games this weekend to
determine which team wins each division to return and play in
the semifinals and perhaps the final the following weekend.
On Saturday, Door County United played its first game to a
heartbreaker tie against Brookfield. After leading 4-1, the team
felt they let one slip away. Three first half goals were scored
by Nate Felhofer. The DC team then came out the second half and
added another goal by Felhofer to take a 4-1 lead. The wheels
then came off with Brookfield scoring 3 unanswered goals and the
game ended in a 4-4 tie.
Assists for DC United’s goals were provided by Steve Quella,
Derek VandenPlas and Alex Bournoville.
Brookfield had 10 shots on goal including their 4 scores. Steve
Quella had 6 saves for DC United.
After the first day, all teams in Division A were tied, having
battled to tie games in their first game of the weekend. In
fact, of the eight games played in all divisions of U-16, five
resulted in ties, making for a very tight competition with two
divisions knotted.
DC United played Mequon United Black yesterday at 1:30 pm. We
will have final results for you in tomorrow's sports report. |
