By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
June 12, 2008

Sturgeon Bay golf coach Tony Smith joined me last night on the Sports Page broadcast from the Ladder House. The Clipper team finished the season 65-15 with an 85% winning percentage. The team accomplished two major goals on the season in winning the Boettcher Cup and the Door County Championship Cup. Coach Smith was proud of his teams efforts this season and looks forward to great expectations for the 2009 team. All five varsity golfers return to next year's team.
Led by John Parent, Sturgeon Bay should have a shot at a state title. "The sky is the limit," said Smith. The coach believes if his team puts in the time this summer and works on consistency on the golf course, the Clippers will be a force to be reckoned with in 2009.

Sevastopol Softball Earns Back-To-Back State Title
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com

It was a case of three sophomore sensations coming through in the clutch for the Sevastopol softball team this weekend in the WIAA Division 4 state championship game. The Pioneers saw contributions from the entire team in a 4-3 win over La Crosse Aquinas.
First year head coach Tim Newton had the daunting task of filling the shoes of 2007 state championship coach Heather Fellner-Spetz and he accomplished his goals. Another state championship for the Pioneers seemed unthinkable after a hot and cold regular season. The team experienced seven losses during the season but caught fire shortly before the tournament began. The flame burnt bright throughout the regional, sectional and state tournament.
The championship game at Goodman Diamond in Madison did not lack in suspense. In the sixth inning, Allison Ripp blasted a run-scoring triple into left-center field and eventually scored the game-winning run that lifted the Pioneers to their second consecutive state title. Winning pitcher Carissa Neinas was responsible for singling in Ripp and the game winner.
The seventh inning got a little scary for the Pioneers. With two out, Neinas gave up a walk and a triple to make it a one run ball game. With hundreds of Door county softball fans looking on, a deep fly ball to left was caught and the celebration was on.
It was the perfect ending for the three seniors on the team. Shortstop Allison Junion, pitcher Carissa Neinas and first baseman Lacey Weber are the only players Sevastopol graduates.

Eagles Bid For State Championship Falls Short in Madison
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
June 7, 2008

The Southern Door Eagles had a 2-0 lead and were one out away from their second consecutive trip to the state championship in WIAA Division 2 softball. An error in the field kept the seventh inning alive for New Berlin Eisenhower and they would eventually tie the game at two to extend the contest into extra innings. In the top of the ninth inning, the Lions capitalized on another Eagles error and scored the game winning run. Southern Door played a great game but came up a few breaks short and fell 3-2 in the sate semi-final.
Eagles' batters struggled against starting pitcher Lauren Beres who struck out nine in the game. Eagle's pitcher Courtney Wautier allowed just one earned run and struck out six. Southern Door was led by leadoff batter Karlee Vandertie with two singles and two stolen bases. Kristi Villers had a hit, stole a base and scored a run. Liz Neumann scored a run, singled and stole a base. Finally, Wautier aided her own cause in the fourth inning with an RBI single.
The Eagles end their season with a 19-3 record. Congratulations and good luck to the two Eagles seniors, Natalie Lacrosse and Jackie Lardinois.

It was the third homerun in State Tournament history at Goodman Diamond in Madison. The ball park was filled with Sevastopol Red and Southern Door blue. The Pioneers had great success against previously unbeaten Oakfield. The defending state champs earned another trip to the state championship after a 6-1 final.
Allison Ripp scored in the fifth on a wild pitch. Then, a two RBI double by Lacy Webber blew the game wide open. At the end of the fifth inning Sevastopol led 6-1. Sevastopol pitcher Carissa Neinas threw a tremendous game striking out seven Aokfield batters.
