Favre Has
"The Itch" To Play Again
By
Nick Freimuth
DoorCountyDailyNews.com
July 3,
2008
Brett Favre's alleged contacts with
the Green Bay Packers about his "itch" to play one more season
with the team was confirmed by ESPN's Chris Mortenson yesterday.
The Sports Page broadcast on 96.7 FM centered on this
announcement last night. The weekly sports talk show featured
guest commentary from Joe Witt and Packers Public relations
Intern Rob Knapp.
Witt said the best thing for the franchise, Favre and the fans
would be for number 4 to stay retired. Knapp chimed in and said
that the Packers would not comment on the report. The team never
releases a statement in response to a player unless it comes
from the player himself.
The timing of the breaking news was quite bizarre. Cornerback Al
Harris just happened to be in studio in Bristol, Connecticut
taping NFL Live for ESPN. The anonymous team source that
apparently leaked the story very well could have been Harris.
It is a surprise to none that Brett has the itch to play again.
He said that in his retirement press conference. He told
reporters that he would want to come back but that he was
retiring for the right reasons. The saga continues...
Knapp, a 2004 Sturgeon Bay High School graduate, also talked
about his experiences working with the Packers this summer. He
had a once in a lifetime opportunity to work with the team
during the offseason. Knapp was responsible for writing the
player bios that will appear in the 2008 media guide. He also
handled media requests from various media outlets from around
the state.
Robert Knapp said his internship is over for the year, but is
looking to stay involved with athletics at the collegiate level.
He is applying for a number of media/public relations jobs
around the country. |

Bucks Draft
Day Moves - A Great Start
By Paul Schmitt DoorCountyDailyNews.com
July 3,
2008
Okay, I’ll be the first to say I
was way off last year in predicting a winning season for the
Milwaukee Bucks. I tip my hat to my counterpart. Nick, you hit
it right on the head when you said the Bucks “lack of defensive
intensity is disheartening for a basketball purist, who believes
defense is the key to success.”
Now fast-forward eight months later, the Bucks have hired a new
coach and general manager. Scott Skiles will bring the
hard-nosed defensive approach his predecessor Larry Krystowiak
failed to do. Mainly because of Larry Harris’ personnel moves
that lacked foresight and chemistry on the floor. John Hammond
saw this and started cleaning house on draft day. First, he
shipped an injury-prone and over-paid Bobby Simmons along with
disappointing rookie Yi Jianlian to the New Jersey Nets for a
proven all-star in Richard Jefferson. Not only will Jefferson
provide 20 points a game and leadership, but also something
that’s been missing in Milwaukee for a long time….a DEFENSIVE
attitude.
Jefferson, a small forward, is only 28 years old and should be
in the prime of his career. It shows that Hammonds is willing to
take a risk, to win games this year.
In the NBA draft last Thursday, Hammonds and Skiles went for Joe
Alexander, a 6-8, tough, athletic forward with a tremendous
upside. Coming from Bob Huggins program at
West Virginia, Alexander should fit in nicely to Skiles’
“defense-first” philosophy. He may not be a huge impact this
year. But look for him to be a six man off the bench who Will be
more productive and advanced than the less physical Yi was last
year. Luc Richard Mbah A Moute, the Bucks second round pick,
will surprise and contribute next season with his defensive and
rebounding expertise.
Hammonds is not finished either. Look for the Bucks to make
another move or two. Mo Williams and/or Michael Redd, the “first
shoot and pass the ball later” backcourt could be gone. And
don’t’ be surprised when malcontent Charlie Villaneuva is traded
for a REAL power forward who plays some defense.
Last Thursday may not have turned the Bucks into NBA Title
contenders, but it sure was a step in the right direction for
this once proud franchise to get back into Play-off contention. |

Sports Point
& Counter Point - Bucks Failed In The Draft
By
Nick Freimuth
DoorCountyDailyNews.com
July 1,
2008The Milwaukee Bucks just entered into the NBA free
agent signing period. Players cannot officially sign a new
contract until July 9, but terms are being negotiated now.
Milwaukee is coming off a dismal season with another sub .500
record. The Bucks overhauled their management team with general
manager Larry Harris and Head Coach Larry Krystowiak sent
packing.
Insert new G.M. John Hammond and new head coach Scott Skiles.
The draft last week could have been an opportunity to balance
the lineup. Instead, the team overloaded on undersized forwards.
The first pick for Milwaukee came at the number eight spot
overall. West Virginia's Joe Alexander was selected. The
6-foot-8 power forward is extremely athletic but at the very
best could turn into a 15 point and eight rebound guy in a few
years.
That leaves the team with a plethora of forwards including
Charlie Vilanueva, Dan Gadzuric, Richard Jefferson, Desmond
Mason, second round draft choice Luc Mbah a Moute, Michael
Ruffin and Awvee Storey. Now that’s a logjam.
The Bucks again failed to address their major position of need.
This season, the team desperately needs a new point guard. The
extremely talented and physically mature D.J. Augustine from
Texas was still on the board for Milwaukee at number eight. The
Bucks passed, something the team rarely does on the court, and
he was the next player selected. There is no indication that the
Milwaukee Bucks will be able to compete for a playoff spot in
2009. |

Ryan Grant May
Sign Soon With Packers
By
Nick Freimuth
DoorCountyDailyNews.com
June 29,
2008The Green Bay Packers still have not finalized a
deal with starting running back Ryan Grant. The former New York
Giant had a break out season last year after joining the team in
week three. Grant is in a unique situation because of his
"newcomer" status. Grant has yet to sign his exclusive-rights
contract. He has stated that he will not sign the $370,000
minimum tender for an exclusive-rights player, who has only one
accrued season of NFL experience.
The running back took part in the team's offseason workouts,
while he was waiting for a long-term deal. Now that OTA's and
mandatory minicamp are in the rearview mirror, the expectations
are that Grant will sign a multi-year, incentive-laden contract
before the start of training camp.
Ryan Grant committed to an intense workout regimen before
leaving Green Bay for the down time before training camp begins
on July 28. He is setting lofty goals for himself for this
season.
(Audio Here)
After falling just short of the 1,000-yard mark in 2007, Grant
is set on blasting through that barrier this season. The Notre
Dame graduate plans on adding muscle weight this offseason and
become the durable back that can take pressure off Brett Favre's
successor Aaron Rodgers this season.
(Audio Here)
The Green Bay Packers will need to establish the running game to
keep teams guessing. Two of the top run defenses in the NFC are
in the Packer's division. The Chicago Bears, led by Brian
Urlacher and the Minnesota Vikings will pose major threats to
the Pack this season. Free agent acquisition Jared Allen and
defensive tackles Kevin and Pat Williams bolster quite possibly
the best defensive line in the National Football League.
Ryan Grant will lead Green Bay's rushing attack in 2008, when
contract negotiations conclude. Second year players Brandon
Jackson and Deshawn Wynn stand in line behind Grant as third
down and two back options. |

Annis & Miller
Leading Hitters In Door County Baseball
By Jocko Rader
DoorCountyDailyNews.com
June 28,
2008
Hitting stats are out and we have a tie for the batting lead
with Jason Annis and Jesse Miller at 5.45 and Stuart Larsen
close at .542. Matt Foss next at 476 and Matt Ash at .458k, Then
comes Ryan Tanck at .455 ,Chris Wery .455 Paul Nelson at.450-,
Steve Jilot at .435 and Andy Schartner at .429. That's the top
ten this week. Top pitchers Adam Bretl and Ryan Tanck.
This weeks action. West Jacksonport at Kolberg. Kolberg won the
first game 11 to 7. Should not be that much scoring this time as
pitchers have settled in. my pick here will be West Jacksonport
to win and stay in the race for first. A loss and its lights
out. Game is on sat. Institute at Egg Harbor. First game 17 to 6
Cubs. Could it be the same this time? I doubt it. Cubs coming
off a tough lost last week. Can they recover, and I think so.
Corey Fuller is back from a month in France. Pick Cubs.
Maplewood at Sister Bay. First game was 214 to 9. A slugfest.
Could it be the same. Could be. Sister Bay looking for its first
win this year. Maplewood now 3 and 3. Cannot afford another loss
now. I pick Mets. Washington Island at Baileys Harbor. First
game 4 to 3 with Island winning in the ninth. They have hitting,
but Anschutz is coming on for the A's, however Woerfel looked
sharp against the Cubs last week. The addition of Tommy Anderson
a big help for A's. tough pick but I will go with the Island to
win in another close one. |
