Kennedy Blahnik Receives State Track Athlete Of The Year Award

What a week it was for Algoma senior Kennedy Blahnik. Her basketball team won three games in three days, she signed a national letter of intent to the University of Wisconsin in Madison on a full track and field scholarship and Saturday was named the Wisconsin Track Coaches Association Female Track Athlete of the Year.

Kennedy had an extremely difficult decision to make in regards to accepting the award. The ceremony was at the same time as her team’s non-conference basketball game at Pulaski Saturday. Blahnik decided that her commitment to her team was more important than being honored at the awards ceremony in Madison.

Accepting her award in her place was her father and coach Dean Blahnik. The master of ceremonies said this award typically means great things are ahead for the recipients.

Award Ceremony

Kennedy did help lead her team in a win over Pulaski 49-43. Missing the ceremony was not easy but it was something her high school basketball coach Mark Zastrow said was one of the least selfish things he has ever witnessed.
