The Southern Door Eagles brought their “A Game” in the first quarter and rushed out to a 26-15 first quarter lead en route to a nail biting 59-56 win in the closing moments. Eagle Gymnasium got a little tense after that as the Eagles lapsed in the second and third quarters offensively.
Defense saved the day when New Holstein clawed back within four points with just two minutes left in regulation. Then the Huskies trimmed the lead to one with less than a minute left and held for the final shot.
The Eagles needed a play and senior Aaron Larsen came up with the game saving steal and hit two free throws to give the Eagles a three point lead and thus the margin for victory. Mitchell Gerend had 21 points to lead the way for Southern Door.
First year head coach Josh Rankin and his Eagles next travel to Valders Friday night.
