Kewaunee graduate Charlie Novak ‘74 is the focus of this week’s “Alumni Spotlight.” Novak participated in football, basketball and track during his distinguished high school sports career. He was a captain and the most valuable player in football, basketball and track. Novak also achieved all-conference and all-state recognitions in basketball.
Following high school, Novak attended the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, where he started four years of varsity basketball under head coach Ken Anderson. After graduating with honors from UW-Eau Claire in 1978, Novak initially worked for Fidelity & Deposit in Milwaukee. He then worked for AXAAdvisors and Equitable, subsequently transferring to a Kewaunee branch in the early 1980s.
As far as his best high school sports memory, Novak remembers scoring over 50 points his senior year in the basketball tournament.
Kewaunee did not have the opportunity to play beyond the regular season in football during Novak’s career. He explains the unfortunate reason why:
Novak says he enjoyed the great rivalry games with area schools like Algoma and Luxemburg-Casco. But the old Packerland Conference offered a game-by-game challenge, according to Novak.
When it comes to giving advice to his two teenage daughters and other high school athletes, Novak states they should remember the “student” half of a student-athlete.
Novak and his wife, Jayne, reside in Kewaunee and have two daughters, Nikayla and Haylie. He is still an advisor with AXA Equitable and is vice president of the Novak Insurance and Real Estate Agency in Kewaunee. If you visit the halls of Kewaunee High School, you will see he is one of the alumni honored with a plaque on the “Wall of Fame”, having been inducted in 2007.
