Competing at the YMCA National Swim Meet in Greensborough, North Carolina, Conner McHugh broke a national record in the 100 Yard Breaststroke. His time of 53.47 Thursday night at the Short Course Nationals was the highlight of the week for the local YMCA team. Conner broke the previous record by 22 one-hundredths of a second.
Conner’s younger brother Max finished 18th in the same race. At 14 years of age he is four years younger than most of the competitors at the national level. The next closest 14 year old in the 100 breaststroke finished in the 100’s.
Teammates Ryan Scripp and Jared Klika joined the McHugh brothers in the relay events but the highest the teams placed was 12th.
Conner added another best time in the 200 IM late Friday night. His third place finish clocked in at 1:48.79.
