Shortstop Alex Gonzalez signed a one-year extension with the Brewers this week. The move provides essential depth at the middle of Milwaukee's infield for the 2013 season. Gonzalez will be used as a backup to young shortstop Jean Segura.
Gonzalez's deal will pay him a $1.45 million base salary, with $1 million more available in incentives for games played and starts. Gonzalez turns 36 this month. Last year, he was Milwaukee's Opening Day shortstop but played only 24 games before tearing the ACL in his right knee on May 5 in San Francisco.
Gonzalez has played shortstop for 14 seasons with the Marlins, Red Sox, Reds, Blue Jays, Braves and Brewers. Milwaukee may need him to play a little third base this season as well.
