What an amazing start to a collegiate running career! Forestville long distance runner Lucy Schmitz was awarded Conference Carolinas Freshman of the Year honor for the Indoor Track season. She won the Mile Run and placed 2nd in the 3000m Run at the Initial Conference Carolinas Indoor Track Meet held last Saturday at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem.
Add a runner-up finish in the 3000m with a personal best and Belmont Abbey College record time of 10:26.28 and it was a magical weekend for the Door County teen. She won the mile run with a time of 5:17.44, which also bettered her school record of 5:20 set in the first meet of the season.
Coach Mike De Witt commented on the efforts of the BAC Women at the Conference Championship: "Lucy Schmitz topped off a great indoor season, where she ran a personal best in every race she competed in this season, that included her high school best as well. Overall it has been an excellent growing season, as short as indoors is (five weeks), the group grew five months worth. We are looking forward to outdoors that gets started up in two weeks."
