The three area state championship wrestlers will walk the halls with pride this week. The WIAA State Individual Wrestling Championships finished up Saturday night with two Luxemburg-Casco wrestlers and one Southern Door Eagle claiming state titles.
Colin Shubert became just the third Southern Door student athlete to win a state title. The last was Joey Charles back in 1997. The first will be the subject of our Razors Edge High School Sports Trivia question Thursday on 104.1 FM WRLU.
Schubert doubled up Andrew Philibeck of Freedom, 8-4 at 145 pounds to claim his gold medal. The senior finished his high school career with an overall record of (47-5) this season. He walks away with a state championship and the crown of the all-time leader in career wins in school history.
Luxemburg-Casco accomplished a rare feat with two teammates claiming gold in the same season. Senior Newton Smerchek won his second straight state title by pinning Brandon Elrick (45-7) of Little Chute in less than two minutes in the 285-pound championship match. His season record was (47-2).
L-C junior Luke Destiche shut down Freedom's Reed Ambrosious 8-1 in the 220-pound Division 2 title match. Destiche finished 2013 out with a (44-7) record and will look to copy Smerchek's back-to-back accomplishment next year.
