Algoma Girls Headed To State

The Algoma girls basketball team eased through the WIAA Division 4 sectional final finishing 51-34 over Oconto Saturday night.

Led by senior Taylor Schmidt, who saw her team lose the state championship two years ago and watched from the bench with a torn ACL as the Wolves missed advancing to the state semifinal by two points, the Wolves rolled over Oconto for the third time this season.

Schmidt and junior Kennedy Blahnik each scored 15 points to lead Algoma. Blahnik scored nine of those in the first seven minutes of the game and the Wolves had a comfortable lead, 32-14, at halftime. The girls relaxed a bit in the third quarter allowing Oconto to outscore them 10-6, but took control again in the fourth.

The Wolves take on Cuba City in a Division 4 semifinal at 6:35 p.m. Thursday at the Resch Center.
