The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay women’s basketball was grossly underrated in the NCAA women’s basketball tournament. Given a number 11 seed in the tournament was a blow after being ranked in the top 25 of all teams according to the AP poll for the last month.
The low seed forced the Phoenix to travel to Louisiana to play sixth seeded LSU. Undersized, UWGB went down 18 points, but clawed their way back late in the second half. LSU held off Green Bay 75-71 Sunday night but it had to combat a furious comeback bid from the Horizon League champions.
Sarah Eichler hit four 3-pointers and scored 22 points. De Pere graduate Adrian Ritchie fouled out with 3:05 left to play. The senior tallied 16 points. Jenny Gilberston added 15 points and Lydia Bauer 11 points for Green Bay.
Algoma’s Sam Zastrow played in the closing moments of the game and heaved a shot at the final buzzer but the shot was too little too late.
