The Milwaukee Brewers took advantage of three Chicago errors and right-hander Hiram Burgos made an impressive Major League debut for the Crew yesterday as they beat the Cubs 5-1 at Miller Park.
Burgos is the first Brewers pitcher to win his Major Leauge debut since 2007. He allowed just one run on five hits in just as many innings.
Two fifth-inning errors by Chicago gave Milwaukee two runs, putting them ahead 3-1. Left fielder Alfonso Soriano committed an error that put Logan Schafer on second to lead off the inning. A few batters later Schaefer scored when Chicago first baseman Anthony Rizzo missed a bouncer from Blake Lalli. Then short stop Starlin Castro misplayed a routine grounder by Norichika Aoki, letting Martin Maldonado score.
Ryan Braun led off the sixth with a single, then Jonathon Lucroy hit one right back at pitcher Edwin Jackson who overthrew to second, putting Braun at third and Lucroy at first. Schafer hit Braun in and Maldonado followed up with a single to let Lucroy cross the plate extending the Brewers lead to 5-1.
The Cubs and the Brewers close out the series at Miller Park this afternoon at 1:10.
