Algoma junior Kennedy Blahnik had a dream junior school year. While holding a 4.0 GPA, Blahnik broke the Wisconsin state records in both the shot put and discus while claiming two more state championships. The junior led the Wolves to a fourth-place finish as a team at the Division 3 state meet. Blahnik’s new Division 3 record throw in the shot put flew 49 feet, 1.5 inches and 154-6 in the discus.
Her commitment and hard work has paid off in competition and now with national recognition. Kennedy Blahnik has been named the Gatorade Wisconsin Girls Track & Field Athlete of the Year. Her shot put throw at the state meet is ranked as the nation’s No. 8 distance by a prep competitor at the time of her selection.
The Gatorade Payer of the Year Award also mentioned her exemplary character as reasons for the nomination and selection. Kennedy is a devoted member of her church community, she has served as the treasurer and vice president of her graduating class and volunteers locally as a vacation bible camp counselor.
“Kennedy Blahnik is a very modest and poised individual,” said Mark Moran, head coach at Marion (Wis.). “She has been able to achieve a great deal in the past several years. Her technique is very consistent and she seems to be only improving with time.”
