Sturgeon Bay held on for a 2-1 win over Denmark in American Legion Baseball last night. The Bays scored in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead on a leadoff single from Riley Schartner and an RBI single from Jason Lindemann.
Denmark tied the game in the 3rd and it remained that way until the top of the 7th when Casey “The Crusher” Giesseman led off with a walk. Michael Larsen laid down a perfect bunt and beat the errant throw. Denmark then brought in their ace pitcher Corey Fischer who fanned the first batter, but on the second batter a ball got away from the catcher and Giesseman raced home with the eventual winning run.
Riley Cordier went the first five innings for the Bays on the mound fanning eight and allowing just three hits. Riley Schartner got the win hurling the last two innings fanning four and allowing just one hit.
The Bays are now (5-2) in conference and (8-5) overall. They will be off until next Tuesday when they travel to The Metrodome for a doubleheader against Viroqua. There is still room on the bus for any fans interested in making the trip. The cost is only $30.00 per person for the round trip. Anyone interested is urged to contact George Husby at 493-2077 as soon as possible.
