When an NFL official makes a mistake there are consequences. Many times
referees are fined and sometimes downgraded. The NFL announced yesterday,
following the Packers Vs. 49ers game, that they have officially downgraded
referee Bill Leavy.
The move comes a day after Leavy’s crew gave San Francisco two third-down plays
in the first half of their 34-28 victory over Green Bay. After a third-and-6 play at the Green Bay
10-yard line in the second quarter, quarterback Colin Kaepernick was driven out of bounds by Clay Matthews. A 15-yard personal foul was called on Matthews as well as on 49’ers offensive lineman Joe Staley for retaliating.
Both penalties were dead ball fouls and should have offset because the infractions happened
after the play. Instead of fourth down, the officials gave San Francisco
another third down play and scored a touchdown on a 10-yard pass to Anquan
