WRLU 104.1 FM was honored to be a part of a great pair of regional high school volleyball matches this week. An instant classic between Southern Door and Sturgeon Bay on Tuesday led to a Clippers loss in three games to Green Bay Notre Dame last night on WRLU.
Sturgeon Bay fell 25-12, 25-18 and 25-9 to an impressive Tritons team who will run into Luxemburg-Casco tomorrow night. The Spartans have already topped Notre Dame in an invitational earlier this season. Coach Jeff Frey is hoping for similar results Saturday starting at 7:00 PM at Green Bay Notre Dame High School.
To add injury to insult Thursday night, the Clippers lost junior middle blocker Sophia Braschnewitz to a scary ankle injury early in the match. The loss seemed to affect the team’s play and Sturgeon Bay never recovered.
The season ends with five seniors leaving the team along with four-year varsity head coach Kim Herlache. She turns the program over to freshman volleyball coach Stacey Judas. Judas has played every level of volleyball including college ball at the University of Wisconsin in Oshkosh.
The Clippers will sorely miss five starters and key contributors next season including Marielle Abayta, Caroline Miller, Natalie Marchant, Jacqueline Herlache and Caralyn Mickey.
Luxemburg-Casco needed four games to put West De Pere away. The Spartans won 25-23, 25-11, 22-25 and 25-16.
In Division 3, Algoma lost to New Holstein 25-19, 12-25, 23-25, 25-20 and 25-16.
N.E.W. Lutheran was a three game sweep winner against Sevastopol. The Blazers won 25-16, 25-18 and 25-9.
