Sturgeon Bay soccer pushed their post season farther than they ever have before by extending their WIAA Division 4 state semi-final into double overtime. A game broadcast on 104.1 FM WRLU featured a rollercoaster of emotions but never lacked excitement. While the program has still not scratched the state finals, it appears to be edging closer in every attempt.
In the 98th minute of a possible 100 minutes of play, the Clippers were short changed by an official ruling that gave the Wildcats a corner kick when it was actually supposed to be Sturgeon Bay’s ball. The scoring opportunity allowed University school a set piece that resulted in the game’s lone goal.
The 1-0 loss was devastating for the senior laden team, but smiles eventually won out after the team reflected on their amazing journey. A total of seven key contributors from the senior class were able to say their graduating class was a part of three state tournament runs in the last four years. They are the only class in school history to make that claim.
Thank you to all of the fine local businesses for making possible the broadcasts of the regional, sectional and state tournament games broadcast on 104.1 FM WRLU. The response from the community was overwhelming.
