Marjorie (Sticka) VanLanen

Marjorie (Sticka) VanLanen, 86, Green Bay, passed away Wednesday July 16, 2008.  She was born February 27, 1922 to the late Edward and Antonia (Novak) Sticka.

She married Marvin VanLanen on October 25, 1941.  They resided in Algoma.  Together they had four sons, Kenneth, Larry, Bill and David.  In 1987 they moved to Green Bay.

Grandma Margie enjoyed her family, a good card game with Janet, road trips to the casino, and cooking.  She especially like making chicken booyah for her sons.  Her grandchildren looked forward to her angel food cakes.

Her pork chops with sauerkraut and dumplings were another family favorite.

Margie is survived by sons Kenneth (Carolyn), Algoma; Larry (Sherrie), Crivitz; and Bill (Nancy), Waupaca; 11 grandchildren, Chris, Jamie, Bridgett, Tina, Nick, Kelly, Dawn, Troy, Audra-Lee, Amy and Ryan; 12 great-grandchildren;  two brothers, Edward (Verna) Sticka, Algoma and Earl

(Pat) Sticka, Chilton; two sisters-in-law, Margaret Sticka,  Green Bay and Janet Van Den Eng, Green Bay; and a daughter-in-law, Carol (Tlachac)

VanLanen, Clintonville.   She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin, son, David, parents, brothers, Marvin Sticka, Omro and Algoma and Milton Sticka, Green Bay.

Friends may call at St. Mary Catholic Church, Algoma, from 9:00am Saturday, July 19, 2008 until the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am with Rev. Bill Swichtenberg officiating.  The family will proceed to the church cemetery for burial.

Donald C. Mann 

Donald C. Mann, 86, of Sturgeon Bay, passed away early Tuesday morning (July 15, 2008) at Door County Memorial Hospital.

He was born January 25, 1922, in Baileys Harbor, the son of the late Cedric Chester Mann and Iva (Ealy) Mann.  Don graduated from Sturgeon Bay High School in 1939.  He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Emmanuel Missionary College (now Andrews University) in 1951. Don served as pharmacist mate with the U.S. Navy.  On August 20, 1942, he married Jeanette Bertha Wilke in Sturgeon Bay. He was employed with the U.S. Navy office in Sturgeon Bay for 30 years as purchasing agent.

He was a member of the Sturgeon Bay Seventh-day Adventist Church, and served on the Wisconsin Conference Executive Committee for the church.  Don maintained his fruit orchard until 2007. He had served as bookkeeper for Bayside Cemetery for many years, Clerk and Assessor for the Town of Sevastopol. He served on the Board of HHES, and held his real estate license.

Survivors include his wife, Jeannette of Sturgeon Bay; two sons and one daughter, Jerome (Shirley) Mann of Sturgeon Bay, Claudia (Daniel) Lindow of Williamsport, MD, James (Karen) Mann of Spangle, WA; eight grandchildren, Adlai Mann of Black River Falls, WI, Loren (Dawn) Mann of Aurora, IL, Eunita (Gary) Collins of Perth, Australia, Ramona (Glenn) Klevgard, Hustisford, WI, Adam Lindow of Magnolia, DE, Tara (Chad) Carbaugh of Greencastle, PA, Lowell Mann of College Place, WA, Larissa Mann of Mount Pleasant, MI; one great grandson, Wade Klevgard; and sister, Alvina (Vincent) Cinquemani of Apopka, FL.

Preceding him in death were his parents, and sister, Dorothy Braley.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday (July 17, 2008) at Sturgeon Bay Seventh-day Adventist Church with Elder Delmar Austin officiating.  Burial will follow at Bayside Cemetery.

Friends may call at Huehns Funeral Home on Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and at the church on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services at 11:00 a.m.

A memorial fund will be established in his name.

                                          Leo F. Tong 

Leo F. Tong, 85, of Tucson, AZ, formerly of Sturgeon Bay, passed away Monday afternoon, (July 14, 2008) in Tucson.

He was born January 26, 1923 in Sturgeon Bay, the son of the late Thomas Tong Sr. and Dessie DeLair Tong.  He graduated from Sturgeon Bay High School in 1941. On September 8, 1942 he married Jean Marie Lake in Sturgeon Bay.   Leo served with the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946 in the South Pacific Theatre.  He worked at the ship yards after high school. Leo operated Dairy Herd Improvement of Door County, and then owned and operated Skelgas.  He moved to Phoenix, Arizona to work for Sears, and then was transferred to Sears in Idaho as their customer service manager.  They retired full time to Tucson, Arizona in 1986.

Survivors include his wife, Jean of Tucson, AZ; one daughter, Renee Hilander of Tucson, AZ and her children, Kelly Mattern of Phoenix, Carrie Ehring of Centerville, OH, Joel Hilander all of Tucson; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; one brother, Bill Tong of Sturgeon Bay; and many dear nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death are his parents, two brothers, Tom and Jack Tong, and three sisters, Mary, Bessie, and Emily Tong.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday (July 22, 2008) at Huehns Funeral Home with Rev. James D. Pfannenstiel (Captain, Chaplain Corps, USN, ret.). Burial will be at Bayside Cemetery.

Visiting will be Monday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Huehns Funeral Home.

Ruth Claflin

Ruth E. Claflin, 84 years, of Sturgeon Bay, died Sunday evening (July 13, 2008) at Golden Living Center/Dorchester.

She was born October 2, 1923 in Forestville, the daughter of the late John and Rosalind (Miller) Zastrow. On October 25, 1941 she married Harold “Goldie” Claflin at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Forestville.  He preceded her in death in 1964. Ruth was a self employed seamstress.

She was a member of St. Peters Lutheran Church in Sturgeon Bay.

Survivors include her son, Larry Claflin of Maryland; son-in-law, Allen Merkle of Baileys Harbor; two grandsons, Daniel and David Merkle; many nieces and nephews; friend, John Kosarski of Sturgeon Bay.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, brother, Wallace, daughter, Lois Merkle, and daughter-in-law, Lisa Claflin.

Funeral services will be held at St. Peters Lutheran Church on Friday, July 18, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Larry Zessin officiating. Burial will be made at Evergreen Cemetery in Algoma. 

Friends may call from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday at Huehns Funeral Home and at the funeral home on Friday from 2:00 p.m. until the time of services at 3:30 p.m. there will be no visitation at church.

Memorials may be made in her memory for St. Peters Lutheran Church.

Mr. Louis A. Theys

Mr. Louis A. Theys, 77, Ellisville, peacefully passed away Wednesday afternoon, July 9, 2008 at Bornemann Nursing Home in Green Bay, surrounded by his family. He was born July 28, 1930 in the town of Montpelier to the late John and Laura (Jadin) Theys.  On July 28, 1954, Louis married Margaret (Peggy) Treml at St. Mary Catholic Church, Luxemburg. He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War.  Louie earned the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and also a medal of Efficiency Honor Fidelity. He was a member of the American Legion Ralph Kline Post 262 in Luxemburg where he served as Post Commander for 2 years and  The Amvets Post 42 of Kewaunee County where he served as Vice Commander and then Commander. He also served as Kewaunee County American Legion Sergeant At Arms, and was a life member of State Post Commanders Club.  Louis operated a farm in Ellisville and was employed with Kewaunee Engineering Corp. Boilermaker Local 487 for 40 years.  His enjoyments included playing cards, hunting and spending time with family.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 54 years, Peggy, one son John Theys, Ellisville, two daughters Julie Theys, Pulaski, Jane Bersie, Green Bay, five grandchildren, one great-grandchild, two brothers, Robert (Marilyn) Theys, Green Bay, Walter (Judy) Theys, Two Rivers, two sisters, Doris (Hubert) Van Den Plas, Maribel, Clara (Joseph) Van Ess, nieces and nephews.

Louis was preceded in death by one infant sister Jenny, one brother Hubert (Mary Ann) Theys, one son in law, Michael Bersie.

Friends may call at the McMAHON FUNERAL HOME, LUXEMBURG 4 to 8 pm, Sunday, July 13, 2008. Combined American Legion Ralph Kline Post 262 and Amvets Post 42 Kewaunee County memorial service 6pm Sunday.  Parish prayer service 7pm with Deacon Bob Pribek.  Visitation will continue Monday morning, July 14, 2008 between 9:00 and 10:00am at the funeral home.  Funeral 11:00 Monday at St. Therese Parish St. Joseph-St. John Site in Pilsen with Rev. Ralph Merkatoris officiating.  Entombment at the Shrine of The Good Shepherd Mausoleum, Green Bay.

The Theys Family expresses much gratitude to the Nurses, CNA’S, Therapists and everyone at Bornemann Nursing Home who took special care of our loved one.  Also a note of thanks to Unity Hospice Staff and Nurses.  We are very grateful for all of your wonderful care!

 
 

Margaret Jeanette Bastar

Margaret “Jeanette” Bastar, 92 years, of Sturgeon Bay, passed away Monday at Golden Living Center/Dorchester.

She was born October 7, 1915 in Ellison Bay, the daughter of the late Emil and Elizabeth (Anderson) Nelson.  Margaret graduated from Gibraltar High School in 1934.  She married William Roger Bastar on May 17, 1940 at Bay View Lutheran Church.  He preceded her in death on August 7, 2001. 

She worked at Algoma Net, the Lantern Factory, Amity Leather and Milwaukee Shoe Company.

Margaret was a member of Bay View Lutheran Church.  She was an avid golfer and bowler, especially at Alaska Golf Course and Apple Valley Lanes. Margaret loved dancing.

Survivors include her four children, William Jr. (Shirley) of Hortonville, Cheryl Breitlow of Green Bay, Dennis of Sturgeon Bay, Jeff of Brookfield; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one sister, June (Stanley) Fritschler of Sturgeon Bay.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, son-in-law, Don Breitlow, two sisters, Lillian Bursen and Edna Aznoe, three brothers, Leonard, Roy, and Reuben Nelson.

Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Friday afternoon, (July 11, 2008) at Bay View Lutheran Church with Rev. Jerry Groth officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Algoma.

Friends may call at the church on Friday from 3:00 p.m. until the time of service at 4:00 p.m.

Memorials may be given in her memory to Bay View Lutheran Church.

Pearline M. Bauers

Pearline M. Bauers, 85, Algoma, died peacefully, Monday July 7, 2008 at the Algoma Long Term Care Unit.  She was born Sept. 6, 1922 in Two Rivers to Oscar and Susan (Burns) Lesperance.  

Pearline married Robert (Robear) Bauers June 20, 1942 in Two Rivers.  The couple managed and ran the Gambles Store in Two Rivers and then moved to Algoma and managed the Gambles Store from 1948 until 1984.  Pearline was always behind the scenes to and raise their seven girls.  She enjoyed sewing, baking and swimming and was an avid reader and crossword puzzle solver.   She was a member os St. Mary Catholic Church, Algoma.   Pearline is survived by her six daughters, Lana (Al) Reinhart, Algoma; Sharyn (Pat) Collins, Green Bay; Cindy (Dan) Weber, Fort Atkinson; Lou Ann (Steve) Salmon, Eagle River; Sue Ann Bauers, (special friend Tim), Eagle River; and Julie Bauers, Sturgeon Bay; 13 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren,  one brother,  Robert Lesperance, Two Rivers; two sisters, Claire DePrey, Niagra Falls, NY; and Lucille (Paul) Peshik, Manitowoc.  She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robear; one daughter, Gail; one brother, Terrance Lesperance and one sister, Beatrice Naidl.  

Friends may call at St. Mary Catholic Church, Algoma,  Friday, July 11,2008 from 9 am until the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am with Rev.  Bill Swichtenberg officiaitng.  Entombment at the Shrine of the Good Shepherd Mausoleum.   The Schinderle Funeral Home, Algoma, assisted the family with arrangements.  

 The family wishes to exrpess their deepest gratitude to the staff at the Algoma Long Term Care Unit for all their kindness and care given to their mother during her stay there and a special thank you to her roommate, Marilyn.

Dema Diller

   

Dema Marie Diller, 94, of Sturgeon Bay, passed away Thursday, July 3, 2008 at Golden Living Center – Dorchester. 

     She was born April 11, 1914 in Lima, Ohio the daughter of the late Carlton A. and Rozella Elizabeth (Nebergall) Ford.  On April 11, 1935 she married Elmer Samuel Diller in Pandora, Ohio. He preceded her in death on December 19, 1992.  She then moved to Sturgeon Bay to be near her son, Raymon Diller and his family.  She attended the First Baptist Church and Sturgeon Bay Methodist Church.  Dema enjoyed spinning, weaving, reading, and knitting.  She was a member of Deborah Circle, and a mother and daughter banquet speaker.

     Survivors include her three children, Marvin (Lucy) Diller of Pandora, Ohio, Zuma (Ron) Bouchard of Concho, Arizona, and Raymon (Elaine) Diller of Sturgeon Bay; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; son-in-law, James Roussos of Limassol, Cyprus.

     Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, six brothers, daughter, Louise Roussos, and grandson, Michael.

     Private family services were held at Huehns Funeral Home on Saturday (July 5, 2008) and will be on Wednesday (July 9, 2008) in Ohio.  Public services in Sturgeon Bay will be held in the near future.

     Memorials may be made in her memory to First Baptist Church or the United Methodist Church in Sturgeon Bay.

     The family would like to thank Dr. John Beck for his kind and compassionate care of Dema while living in Sturgeon Bay, and to Golden Living Center-Dorchester for their wonderful care during her final days.

Eugene Everett Anderson

Professor Emeritus Eugene Everett Anderson, 87, of Sturgeon Bay, died at
Wyndemere Estates in Green Bay on July 5, 2008.  He was born April 7, 1921 in the town of Nasewaupee to Endre and Esther (Olson) Anderson.   Eugene grew up on Mount Olive Road and was a graduate of Sturgeon Bay High School.  He married his high school sweet heart Marie Margaret Holt on April 14, 1944 in San Francisco, CA.  She preceded him in death on November 8, 1994.   During World War II he served in the U. S. Navy stationed in the South Pacific on the USS Essex aircraft carrier.  After the war he received a Master of Science Degree from the University of Wisconsin at Madison.  He was hired by the University of Wisconsin as a Horticulturist for the county of Bayfield.  He relocated to Washburn, WI the county seat where he resided for 30 years.  During his years in Washburn he was an active member of the United Methodist Church.  For many years Washburn residents received the benefit of his community service.  Eugene Everett planted trees and flowers up and down Main Street, was a member of the Masons and was instrumental in developing the youth and senior center in Washburn.  In his efforts to promote the fruit growers of Bayfield County, Mr. Anderson convinced the local fruit growers to hold an annual apple festival.  The yearly festival, known as Applefest,  began in 1962 and was attended by over 50,000 people last year.   Eugene was also a past member of the Elks Club in Ashland and was a member of Alpha Sigma Phi.  He and Marie returned to Sturgeon Bay in 1994 to be close to family.  Having been married for more than 50 years, Marie preceded him in death that same year.  Survivors include five daughters, Riki Anderson, New Prague, MN; Robyn Carol Anderson, Sturgeon Bay; Susan (Michael) Albertson, Green Bay; Dee (Bruce) Cauble, Edina, MN; Robin Rae (Greg Thiede) Anderson, Sturgeon Bay; 9 grandchildren, Brian and Barbara Hackbarth; April and Andrew Albertson; Alex, Christina, and Connor Cauble; Daniel and Michael DeBauche; two great grandchildren; four siblings, Betty Mickelson, Sturgeon Bay; Ardis Witt, Wisconsin Rapids; Carol (Robert) Hansen and Richard (Kathy) Anderson, Sturgeon Bay; numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his wife, a sister, Janice Hogan; two brothers-in-law, Emil Mickelson and Hank Witt.

Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 11, 2008 at Bay View Lutheran Church, the Rev. Jerry Groth officiating.  Burial in Mt. Olive Cemetery.  Friends may call from 4:30  to 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the Forbes Funeral Home and then after 10:00 a.m. Friday at the church until time of services.  Memorials may be made in his name to American Heart Association, 2149 Velp Ave., Green Bay, WI 54302 or Unity Hospice, 2366 Oak Ridge Circle, DePere, WI 54115.  Written condolences may be sent to the Anderson family in care of Robyn Anderson, 2710 Buffalo Ridge Rd., Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235.  On line condolences maybe offered from www.forbesfunerals.com

 Donald W. Buhk

Donald W. Buhk, 76 years, of Jacksonport, died peacefully in his sleep early Friday morning, July 4, 2008, at his home. 

     He was born February 1, 1932 in Two Rivers, the son of the late Alfred and Edna (Rahn) Buhk.  He graduated from Washington High School in 1950.  Don served in the United States Army from 1950 to 1955.  He worked for General Telephone for 35 years, and Cherryland Airport for six years.  On July 13, 1957 he married Karen Begotke at Holy Redemer Catholic Church in Two Rivers.  He enjoyed coin collection and fishing.

     Survivors include his wife, Karen of Jacksonport; two sons, Jim (Margaret), John (Christine); daughter-in-law, Seanna Buhk; grandchildren, Rachel (Nick) Beauchamp, Charles, Thomas, David, Sam, Ryan, Michael; great-grandchildren, Nathan, Brynn; sisters, Shirley (Glenn) Daugs, Eunice Gadinnski; and sister-in-law, Mary (Chuck) Muench.

     He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Wayne; granddaughter, Molly Margaret; and one brother, Melvin.

     A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, (July 9, 2008) at Stella Maris Parish- Jacksonport (St. Michael Catholic Church) with Fr. Richard Mauthe as celebrant.  Friends may call at the church on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the Mass at 11:00 a.m.  Burial will follow in the St. Michael Cemetery.

 Marie V. Merkel (Mrs. Ray)

Marie V. Merkel (Mrs. Raymond), 86, Milwaukee, formally of Pilsen died unexpectedly in her home, Saturday morning July 5, 2008. She was born October 11, 1921 in Pilsen to the late John M. and Katherine (Wochos) Wavrunek.
On July 05, 1947 Marie married Raymond Merkel at St. Boniface Church in Milwaukee. He preceded her in death seven weeks ago, May 10, 2008.
Her enjoyments included crafting, rummage sales, bird watching, and tending to her flowers.
Survivors include her children, Paul and Mary Merkel, West Allis, Diane and Glen Laubenstein, Waunakee, her grandchildren, Tony Merkel, Elisa and Paul Laubenstein, two sisters, Helen Martin, Ann Wavrunek, both of DePere, one brother and one sister in law, Edward and Rosemary Wavrunek, Pilsen, four brothers in law and four sisters in law, Karl Dobr, Chicago, Robert Merkel, Memphis, TN, Roger and Marcy Merkel, Milwaukee, Pearl Savinski, Milwaukee, Betty and Kenny Leichtle, Shirley Leer, all of Tomah, many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister in law .Johnny Wavrunek, Wencil “Jim” and Esther Hanna, Joe Hanna, three sisters and one brother in law, Evelyn Boettcher, Rose Dobr, Barbara Wavrunek and Melvin Martin, five brothers in law and two sisters in law, Wilbert Merkel, William Merkel, Onie Merkel, Aurelia and Charlie Strysick, Sally and Rob Baeten.
Friends may call between 9:00 am and 10:45 am, Wednesday, July 9, 2008 at St. Therese Parish, St. Joseph-St. John Site, Pilsen. Funeral 11:00 am at the Church with Rev. Milton Suess officiating. Burial in St. Wenceslaus Cemetery, Pilsen.
Mom, you were a wonderful Mother and Grandmother. We know Dad is taking care of you again!
A special “thank you” is extended to Halina Syroka for her loving care of our Mom and Dad these past eight months.
