Don Niles of Peninsula Pride Farms and a Kewaunee County farmer will be the speaker at Crossroads at Big Creek Wednesday evening lecturing on a program called "Surface and Ground Water".  Dr. Niles, a veterinarian, explained in a previous interview with why the Peninsula Pride Farms organization was formed.

Peninsula Pride Farms includes 43 farms in Kewaunee and southern Door Counties.  The lecture "Surface and Ground Water" program will begin at 7pm Wednesday at Crossroads in Sturgeon Bay and is free to the public.  Audience feedback and questions will be allowed following the presentation by Niles.

DNR Looks To Move Positions To Improve Factory Farm Oversight

Despite a plan to cut 9.5 jobs in its agency, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources would like to shift four positions to oversee factory farms in the state. The proposed move for the 2017-2019 budget cycle would allow more people to review permits and monitor compliance. Kewaunee County Groundwater Task Force Chairperson Lee Luft says this is another step in the right direction for a state that has seen concentrated animal feeding operations grow to 285 and for an area that has experienced the largest growth in herd count.

Luft says adequate staffing at the DNR, specifically in the departments concerning CAFOs, was one of the concerns brought up during the workgroup meetings held in Kewaunee County. Budget requests for the DNR and other state agencies were released on Friday.
