Marvin A. Vandervest

Marvin “Red” A. Vandervest, 95, of Algoma, passed away with his family at his side on October 4, 2019 at Algoma Long Term Care Unit.  He was born August 20, 1924 in Algoma, WI to the late Fred and Mary (Dellis) Vandervest.  He was an alter boy throughout grade school and high school.  Red proudly served his county in the United States Navy from 1944-1946.  On June 28, 1948 he married Edith Marek at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Casco. He worked for Algoma Hardwoods for 43 years as a panel joiner. In addition, he was a member of the Carpenters Union and the Civil Defense.  Red enjoyed gardening, motorcycling, auto mechanics, and taking bus trips. 


Red is survived by his wife of 71 years, Edith; his children Joan (Dennis) Captain, Mark (Nancy) Vandervest, Nancy Novotny, and “son” Robert Novotny Sr.; grandchildren Amy (Al) Wery, Jim (Cassandra) Captain, Wade (Jodi) Vandervest, Ryan (Lyndsay) Vandervest, Tyler (Casey) Vandervest, Troy Vandervest, Jennifer (Kevin) Cardinal, Robert (Emily) Novotny Jr., and Tracy ( Jessica) Novotny; great-grandchildren Amanda, Ashley, Amber, and Abby Wery; Julia and Grant Vandervest; Dylan and Gavin Vandervest; Hattie and Max Vandervest; Andree, Noah, and Eli Cardinal; and Hank(Robert III), Tommy, and Luke Novotny; sisters-in-law Lucille Springgate and Sandy Linskens; as well as nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Fred and Mary Vandervest; father-in-law and mother-in-law Ed and Leone Marek; son Bruce Vandervest; grandson Brian Vandervest; sisters and brother Marcella (Ollie) Kussard, Orville (Tuff) Vandervest, Marion (Joe) Selner, Patsy (Ed) Fiala; and brother-in-law Maynard (Alicia) Marek.


Visitation will take place at St. Peter Catholic Church, Lincoln on October 8, 2019 from 8:30 to 10:30.  Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. with Farther Edward Looney officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
