Rivera Retires As A Packer
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
July 22
, 2008

Former Packers guard Marco Rivera, who spent nine seasons (1996-2004) in Green Bay, has informed the club of his decision to retire with the team. Green Bay Packers Executive Vice President Ted Thompson made the announcement.

“Marco was the consummate professional,” Thompson said. “His toughness and approach to the game of football provided a great model for his teammates, as did his dedication to charitable work. We’re happy to welcome Marco as a member of our alumni.”

A native of Elmont, NY, and a graduate of Penn State, Rivera played 11 seasons in the National Football League, including two years in Dallas (2005-06). He started at guard for seven consecutive seasons for Green Bay (1998-2004); just one other Packers guard has started more consecutive years (Jerry Kramer, nine from 1958-1966) since 1958. Rivera also was selected to three Pro Bowls (2002-04).

During his tenure with the Packers, Rivera played in 99 consecutive games (106 including postseason). His teammates voted him as the Packers’ 2004 ‘Ed Block Courage Award’ winner in recognition of his continuing ability to play through injury.

“To retire as a Packer in my book is the greatest thing you can say as a football player in the NFL,” said Rivera. “It’s an honor and a privilege to retire and become a member of the Packers alumni with all the great players I played with and those that came before me.”

Rivera was recognized often for his charitable work, including the Packers’ 2004 ‘Walter Payton Man of the Year’ award. He conducted a popular youth football clinic in Puerto Rico, established ‘The Marco Rivera Outreach Foundation’ to work with Green Bay-area charities and took part in an NFL-sponsored USO trip to visit troops in Kuwait and Qatar.

New Addition to Packers Hall of Fame
By DoorCountyDailyNews.com
July 18
, 2008

The Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame, Inc., today announced the donation of 13 autographed team footballs from longtime fan John Spalding. The balls are from various teams from the 1972 through 1985 seasons.
Included in the donation are autographed balls from the 1972 Central Division championship team and the 1982 playoff team. Some of the players and coaches with signatures on the balls include Bart Starr, James Lofton, Lynn Dickey, Paul Coffman and John Brockington.
“It’s a wonderful addition to our archives,” said Hall of Fame Director and Archivist Tom Murphy. “We really didn’t have much in our collection from those teams. Some of the teams from that era weren’t necessarily great teams, but certainly there were some outstanding players. It’s great to have some autographed memorabilia to represent the exciting moments from those times.
“The balls are all in great condition and we’re very appreciative of John’s donation to the Hall.”
Spalding was a longtime gameday sideline assistant for the team, charting participation stats during the game for the coaching staff from the mid-60s until the mid-80s when the practice was eventually replaced by the process of reviewing game film for such information. He received the balls during those years of association with the team.
“We thought it would be a good idea to share them with other Packers fans rather than just having them stored at the house,” said Spalding. “I collected them over the years and figured the Packers Hall of Fame would be the best place to keep them.”
Some of the balls are currently on display in the Hall of Fame in a temporary case, and eventually will be included in appropriate areas of the permanent displays.

Door County Baseball League Report
By Jocko Rader DoorCountyDailyNews.com
July 18
, 2008

Door County Baseball League report this week, shows Kolberg still unbeaten going 9 and 0. Leading hitters this week we had, Steve Jilot with 3 hits and 5 RBI's Bob Fellner was four for four, Tucker Emerson had 3 hits, as did Justin Hartel, Owen Hubner and Steve Wipperfurth. Whip was on base five times in the Maplewood game. He is a very fine player and has been for years. Homeruns by Jason Shimon and Paul Parent. Adam Bretl and Dave Nienas the dynamic dual for Kolberg are undefeated this year. Stuart Larsen continues to lead the league in hitting. Jesse Miller in second as Matt Foss and Matt Ash went hitless last week.
Now for the games this week. Kolberg at Institute: big, big game for the Cubs as the season is winding down and they want to get in the playoffs. Kolberg will be 10 and 0 however after this week. West Jacksonport at Maplewood: Mets had a big set back Sunday in their lost to the Cubs. Now they are fighting for a playoff spot also. Can they
beat West Jacksonport at home? I doubt it. Ports to win and stay in second. Washington Island at Egg Harbor: The team could of beat the Ports and the Braves, but could not get a key hit with bases loaded four different times. Egg Harbor up and down. What will it be this week. I will go with the Islanders to get back on the winning track. Baileys Harbor at Sister Bay: Justin Hartel will face the team he played on this year. Both teams are having a rough year and no hopes for playoff. Big, big rivalry game here. My pick will be Sister Bay in a mild upset. Jocko Rader reporting for DoorCountyDailyNews.com. My record this year is 30 and 8.

Packers Unveil Tundra Tailgate Zone
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
July 17
, 2008

The Green Bay Packers Thursday unveiled the newest addition to Packers training camp at Lambeau Field: the Tundra Tailgate Zone.

A free attraction at camp, the 46,000-square foot area in the parking lot on the stadium’s east side, which includes three climate-controlled tents, will house an entertainment area with a main stage, the Packers Experience, and a food and beverage area.

“We’re excited to enhance our training camp experience with the Tundra Tailgate Zone,” said Packers President/CEO Mark Murphy. “Attending training camp is among the most enjoyable experiences for a Packers fan, and we’re committed to improving it. The Tundra Tailgate Zone and its features will add to the festive environment that exists between Clarke Hinkle Field and Lambeau Field.”

The new area will make its debut at the July 24 Green Bay Packers Annual Meeting of Shareholders, hosting an exclusive tailgate party for Shareholders attending the meeting. It then will be open for training camp from July 28 through Aug. 20, with occasional closings based on the team’s practice schedule, games, etc.

The main feature of the Tundra Tailgate Zone will be scheduled activities on the main stage, including player autograph sessions for younger fans, alumni autograph and question-and-answer sessions, special guest speeches, jersey giveaways, live bands and other performances. The activities will be scheduled for appropriate times before or after team practices.

Expected to be among the most popular main stage activities will be the "Future Lambeau Leapers," a continuation of the autograph program designed specifically for fans ages 12 and younger.

The Kemps Packers Experience will be the new home of the activity area for younger Packers fans that has been a popular staple of training camp for years. Young fans can enjoy inflatable football games and participate in several skills challenges.

The food and beverage area will offer an array of choices, including favorite tailgate-type foods fans can expect to find at Lambeau Field, as well as many other offerings.

The Tundra Tailgate Zone also will be utilized during the regular season, with more details available near the end of training camp.

A full schedule for the Tundra Tailgate Zone highlighting all its options is available online at www.packerstrainingcamp.com. The Web site also features an all-encompassing visitors’ guide to training camp. Daily practice schedules and information about other attractions at Lambeau Field are available, including the Packers Pro Shop, Packers Hall of Fame, Lambeau Field Stadium Tours and dining options.

SPORTS POINT AND COUNTERPOINT

It's Aaron Rodgers Turn
By Paul Schmitt DoorCountyDailyNews.com
July 17
, 2008

Memo to Brett Favre....BRETT PLEASE GROW UP! I know that sounds a little harsh, but Favre has put the Packer fans, not to mention the organization in a "no-win" situation. When Brett gave his tearful, heartfelt retirement speech in front of the nation four months ago, he risked the door closing behind him. He even said the organization did not pressure him to retire, only to make a decision before the draft and free agency. Well, now as Laurel told Stanley, "this is another fine mess you've got me into". What are the Packers suppose to do now, drop all their plans when Brett "feels" 100% committed to playing this year?

Nick says, "A 100% committed Favre allows Green Bay to contend this year for a world championship." But what happens if the Packers welcome him back and the week before the season starts, Brett changes his mind again. The Packers gave him a couple chances to come back. Now is not the time. This should be Aaron Rodgers team.

Brett, figure out what you want to do the rest of your life and move on. The Packers are NOT going to release you or trade you. Deal with it, and please resolve this soon. You owe it to the Packers, the fans, your family and more importantly to yourself.

Favre Should Be Welcomed Back With Open Arms
By Nick Freimuth DoorCountyDailyNews.com
July 16, 2008

The Packers should let Brett play as long as he wants. I think there is a fraction of 1% of NFL players that should be able to call it quit when they want to, and Brett Favre is definitely in that conversation. After a brilliant 2007 season, where Favre led his team to the NFC Championship game, had one of the highest completion percentages of his career and one of his best passer ratings, he should be welcomed back with open arms to the organization.

Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy should not bank on Aaron Rodgers to help the team return to a (13-3) record and a shot at a Super Bowl. Favre is in great shape at 38 years old. He has never had major knee or shoulder surgery, he has avoided concussions and appears eager to play the game again. A 100% committed Favre allows Green Bay to contend this year for a world championship.

The Green Bay Packers organization is bigger than Favre, but he has earned the right to change his mind. The offense has changed a little in the offseason. Coach McCarthy has tweaked formations and roll out options to get the young quarterback on the edge for a chance to run in short down and distance scenarios. While number four may not want to run like Rodgers does, Brett can throw the quick slant and pick up the needed three yards better than anyone in the league.

Ted Thompson would put a huge blemish on the franchise if he did not allow one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time to come back for another season or two if he so desires. The three time NFL MVP deserves to prove himself one last time. I believe with Favre, Green Bay becomes the number one contender in the NFC this season.

Favre May Be Coming Back...With A Different Team
By Nick Freimuth  DoorCountyDailyNews.com
July 12
, 2008

The Green Bay Packers are aware of the latest developments regarding Brett Favre. According to ESPN, His apparent talks with General Manager Ted Thompson and coach Mike McCarthy did not go as well as the former quarterback would have liked. Fox News reported that Favre, through his agent Buss Cook, issued a letter to the franchise asking for his release from the team. That would allow Favre to choose which team he would play for in the 2008 season.
The Packers issued an official statement in response to the news.
"Brett earned and exercised the right to retire on his terms. We wanted him to return and welcomed him back on more than one occasion. Brett’s press conference and subsequent conversations in the following weeks illustrated his commitment to retirement.
The finality of his decision to retire was accepted by the organization. At that point, the Green Bay Packers made the commitment to move forward with our football team.
As a retired player, Brett has the option to apply for reinstatement with Commissioner Goodell. If that were to occur, he would become an active member of the Green Bay Packers. As always, the Packers will do what’s right and in the best interest of the team.
As with all Packers greats, Brett’s legacy will always be celebrated by our fans and the organization, regardless of any change in his personal intentions.
Brett and Deanna will always be a part of the Packers family."

The game time for the preseason finale between the Packers and the Tennessee Titans at Lambeau Field on Thursday, August 28, has been moved up one hour, to 6:00 p.m. CDT.

“Mindful that Tennessee is designated as a Gold Package game, we went along with the change, feeling that it also was a benefit to our fans coming from southern Wisconsin. The 6:00 p.m. start time will get them home an hour earlier to start their Labor Day weekend,” said Blumb.

Cam Fuller Awarded All-State Honors
By Nick Freimuth  DoorCountyDailyNews.com
July 7
, 2008

Sevastopol senior Cam Fuller was named to the Wisconsin High School Golf Coaches Association all-state boy’s golf team last week. The WHSGCA only considered golfers who avoided any athletic code-related suspensions for all-state honors. Fuller earned Second team all state honors for his consistent play throughout the season. He was the only player from the Packerland Conference to receive this great honor.
Fuller also qualified for the Wisconsin Amateur Tour this week. The tournament will be July 21-24 at Old Hickory Golf Course in Beaver Dam. Fuller tied for 13th despite not playing very well.
(Audio Here)
He said all that matters is that he made the cut. He shot a 77 in the qualifier, which is five over par. Fuller played in the State Amateur last year. It features the top 180 amateurs in the state. Fuller believes he is the only Door County golfer that made the cut.

Door County Baseball League Report
By Jocko Rader  DoorCountyDailyNews.com
July 6
, 2008

Top hitters in the Door County League last Sunday. John Price four for five. Jason Shimon
three, Stuart Larsen three, Mike Stoneman three, and Matt Ash four. Home run hitters. Matt Ash two, Matt Foss, Len Atkins, Aaron Delorit, Brett Anschutz, Jim Laughlin, Stuart Larsen, Travis Leroy and Adam Bretl. This weeks action, we have Sister Bay at Institute and the Bays are winless at his point. Cubs coming off a tough lost to Egg Harbor as the defense sprung leaks all over the place, Kit Schartner not at his best but will be good enough this week to beat the Bays. Washington Island at West Jacksonport and this should be a dandy, as the Ports lost a tough one last week to Kolberg and all but see this talented team out of the race for first. Now its time to hang on for a playoff bid. The Islanders are the surprise team of the league this year. Baileys Harbor was last year but hid the skids in the second half. Will this happen to the Island. Too much hitting for that to happen. Pick will be Islanders if Delorit does not pitch. Baileys Harbor at Kolberg. What a difference a year makes. Lost year they lead the league at the end of the first half. Now they have only two wins, but have played some close games however. Kolberg on a roll and at home, it is Kolberg all the way. Maplewood at Egg Harbor. The Indians were on the warpath last week and beat the Cubs, can they get another one from the Mets? Indians won the first game l1 to 7. My pick will be the Mets to split the series this year and win this one. Cody bauer could be tough however. Doing a good job on the mound for the Indians.
Note: The All Star game will be 8:00PM at Baileys Harbor on July 18.

Favre Has "The Itch" To Play Again

Brett Favre's alleged contacts with the Green Bay Packers about his "itch" to play one more season with the team was confirmed by ESPN's Chris Mortenson yesterday. The Sports Page broadcast on 96.7 FM centered on this announcement last night. The weekly sports talk show featured guest commentary from Joe Witt and Packers Public relations Intern Rob Knapp.
Witt said the best thing for the franchise, Favre and the fans would be for number 4 to stay retired. Knapp chimed in and said that the Packers would not comment on the report. The team never releases a statement in response to a player unless it comes from the player himself.
The timing of the breaking news was quite bizarre. Cornerback Al Harris just happened to be in studio in Bristol, Connecticut taping NFL Live for ESPN. The anonymous team source that apparently leaked the story very well could have been Harris.
It is a surprise to none that Brett has the itch to play again. He said that in his retirement press conference. He told reporters that he would want to come back but that he was retiring for the right reasons. The saga continues...

Knapp, a 2004 Sturgeon Bay High School graduate, also talked about his experiences working with the Packers this summer. He had a once in a lifetime opportunity to work with the team during the offseason. Knapp was responsible for writing the player bios that will appear in the 2008 media guide. He also handled media requests from various media outlets from around the state.
Robert Knapp said his internship is over for the year, but is looking to stay involved with athletics at the collegiate level. He is applying for a number of media/public relations jobs around the country.
