Domestic violence underreported in gay community

Help of Door County is seeing increased activity at its office but among the LGBTQ community that trend is not as clear. Executive Director Steve Vickman says that domestic violence centers on control, including physical control, which means 86 percent of cases reported are male-on-female. Men who suffer abuse are less likely to come forward due to the stigma attached.

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Vickman hopes the effort will help all who need to come forward to take the necessary steps.
