Keep an eye on your credit card statement after you buy gas at certain stations. The practice of placing a temporary hold on a credit card when buying gasoline at the pump is not uncommon. The usual hold is between $50 and $100, but Exxon stations in some parts of the country have been placing credit card holds as high as $175. A listener recently made the Door County Daily News aware that this is happening locally at Exxon stations in Door County. An Exxon representative told WVUE in New Orleans that holds typically only last a few hours and they are at the mercy of the financial institutions when it comes to the credit card hold. Financial expert James Spiro told the same television station that the issue comes from people bypassing the PIN when using a debit card. He suggests banks are being extra cautious with high gas prices prevalent across the country.
