Sevastopol celebrates Global DI titles

Sevastopol Schools proved this week that you do not need to be on a sports team to get a championship parade. The Sevastopol Destination Imagination teams, one made up of elementary school students and the other middle school students, arrived from Kansas City, Missouri Wednesday evening fresh off their wins at the Destination Imagination Globals competition. Fourth-grader Margaret Thomas and eighth-grader Ben Martin says a lot goes into the competition.

When they arrived in Sturgeon Bay Wednesday night, the teams were treated to a parade and were honored by the entire student body with a victory lap around the school Thursday morning. Martin and DI Coordinator Gerald Borkovetz are appreciative of all of the support.

The Sevastopol Destination Imagination organization has been a powerhouse in recent memory, winning over a dozen Global titles. You can listen to our full interview with Martin, Thomas, and Sevastopol DI coordinators Ann Rabach and Gerald Borkovetz below.

FROM SEVASTOPOL SCHOOL DISTICT

Sevastopol sent two teams to the Destination Imagination Global competition in Kansas City, MO. Both are coming home global champions! The elementary team, consisting of Shane Leist, Ryder Ortmayer, Will Ortmayer, Maggie Thomas, Silas Martin, Jackson Toivonen, and Mayra Cordua Stenzel who are coached by Mindi Vanderhoof and Shelley Stenzel, competed in the scientific challenge “Up Close.” They took first place overall and also were awarded the highest instant challenge award for scoring the highest in that category. The middle school team, consisting of Evan Isaksen, Liam Schultz, Zoey Copiskey, Ben Martin, Finn Mathews, and Marcus Mann who are coached by Nick Schultz and Jenny Hobart, competed in the engineering challenge “Roll with It.” They took first place overall, and they were awarded a Renaissance award. “The Renaissance Award recognizes those who demonstrate extraordinary amounts of effort and preparation in their solutions or outstanding skill in engineering, design or performance. While the destination is creativity, these fellow travelers make the journey itself memorable.”

Destination Imagination’s mission is to inspire and equip youth to imagine and innovate through the creative process with the goal of Igniting the power of ALL youth to be the creative and collaborative innovators of tomorrow. To represent not only Sevastopol, but the State of Wisconsin on the global stage is more than impressive—to win the highest honors after a year of effort? The victory is sweet, not just for these kids and their dedicated coaches, but for all of us. The #SevastopolPioneers future looks bright in their hands!
