Rising produce prices inspire free garden kits

You will have to act fast to get in on the latest collaboration of Healthy Door County, the Door County Master Gardeners, and the Door County Seed Library. The three organizations are teaming up to provide free garden kits to people interested in growing their own food and starting a new hobby. Each kit includes starter plants, seeds, grow bags, potting mix, a trowel and cultivator set, a tomato cage, bean poles, and planting tips. Shauna Blackledge from Healthy Door County says some of the inspiration for the program comes from people’s grocery bills, which have seen the cost of fresh fruit jump 10 percent and vegetables six percent over the last year.

Only 100 kits are available, and you can click this link to reserve yours. Gardening has only increased in interest since the pandemic, with 36 percent more people growing vegetables in 2020 compared to 2019.
