School safety continues to be a tough conversation

Over 20 years after the Columbine High School shooting changed how the country looked at school safety, the topic continues to spark conversation with every event.

Last week, 19 children and two adults were killed by a gunman at a Texas elementary school, reigniting gun control and school safety debate across the country. Closer to home, Kiel Middle School was subject to four days of bomb threats related to an investigation into three students accused of sexual harassment for refusing to use the preferred pronouns for a fellow student. The district has since decided to end the school year in virtual learning, and the city canceled its Memorial Day Parade due to the threats.

Sturgeon Bay School District Superintendent Dan Tjernagel says Columbine changed how school districts and local law enforcement work together to prepare for possible threats. Those preparations include holding safety drills, hiring school resource officers, and including security features in new building construction. He believes it is important for people to realize it is ok to be worried and that it is ok to have conversations addressing those concerns.

Door County schools received over $200,000 in 2018 from the Wisconsin Department of Justice School Safety Grant program. That included $103,930 for Sturgeon Bay School District, $60,000 for Gibraltar Area Schools, $10,000 for Washington Island School District, $53,338 for Sevastopol School District, and $63,370 for Southern Door School District. The grant dollars were used to make various improvements, such as secure entrances.
