Compressor fire among 199 Memorial Day calls

With more people comes more work for Door County emergency personnel. Just under 200 calls were received by the Door County Dispatch Center between Friday at 7 a.m. to Tuesday at 7 a.m.

Door County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Pat McCarty says that is about what they see on a usual holiday weekend, adding that deputies compared the traffic to be closer to what is typically seen on Independence Day weekend, a traditionally busier time.

The weekend got started with a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of State Highway 42/57 and Gordon Road after 9 a.m. Friday morning. A 30-year-old Sturgeon Bay woman driving a sports utility vehicle rear-ended an Eagle Mechanical truck waiting to turn left onto Gordon Road. The police report says the woman looked down at her speedometer and could not avoid the truck when she looked back up. Her vehicle went into a ditch, and both vehicles had to be towed. The scene was cleared after 9:45 a.m., and the woman was transported to Door County Medical Center where she was treated for a suspected minor injury. The woman was cited for inattentive driving.

According to the dispatch report, there were four fire calls reported, including two in the City of Sturgeon Bay. One of the fires involved an industrial air compressor on County O in the Town of Nasewaupee Saturday evening. Fire Chief Rich Olson says approximately 10 Southern Door firefighters responded to the fire after 6:15 p.m., where they found the machinery ablaze away from nearby buildings. While the unit is a complete loss with no cause known, there was no other damage, and firefighters completed their work in about 30 minutes.
