Some of the best barbeque you can taste in the entire country will be just a ferry ride away this weekend. While you will have to wait until Saturday to sample it, the hard work begins on Wednesday. That is when competitors can first check-in and start setting up for their residency at the Washington Island Airport. The meat they will be using will be inspected on Friday before a welcome party. The public will be able to take part in the festivities on Saturday. In addition to visiting the different barbeque booths, there will also be children’s games, live music, and other activities. The first awards will be passed out at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, hours after entrants’ chicken, pork ribs, pork, and beef brisket need to be turned in. The competition will wrap up on Sunday as the competitors enter steak options, dessert, and Death’s Door Gin cocktail entries. The grand champion winners from 2021 included Red Rock Café from Amasa, Mich. (Day 1), and Can Country Outlaw BBQ from St. Louis (Day 2).
