If you want to avoid any surprises on the water this summer, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary would love to see you before leaving the dock. U.S. Coast Guard Auxillary Commander Kevin Osgood estimates that between 300-400 boat owners go through the voluntary process of having their vessels checked over by members of the auxiliary or other similar organizations like the Door County Sail and Power Squadron to make sure they comply with federal and state law. Marine radios, fire extinguishers, first aid kits, and more are some items addressed on the vessel safety checklist. Osgood recommends that all boaters get a safety check before heading out on the water, as the inspection may cover items you need to consider.
You can contact the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary to visit your vessel for free inspection. Otherwise, eight dates are coming up in Door County where you can bring your vessel to get looked at, including May 23rd at West Marine from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Osgood reminds boaters that just because you get your vessel inspected and receive your inspection sticker, it does not mean that the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Coast Guard will not board your boat if they suspect something is wrong.
