A Washington Island man had to be transported to Door County Medical Center for injuries he suffered when his home was destroyed by a fire early Saturday morning. The Washington Island Fire Department was paged to the home on Townline Road just after 1 a.m. on Saturday. When crews arrived, the home was fully engulfed, triggering the need for more firefighters to be called into action from the mainland through the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System. Washington Island Fire Chief Pete Nehlsen said Monday morning that their attack started in a more defensive mode first, as he had one fire truck dedicated to keeping an oil tank and a propane tank cool enough so it did not combust. Nehlsen added that they had the fire mostly under control before firefighters from Sister Bay/Liberty Grove, Ephraim, and Baileys Harbor were able to board the ferry to help knock down the fire further and do some of the hard clean-up work that followed. A separate medical call further complicated the proceedings. Nehlsen is very appreciative of MABAS for helping out his department with calls like this, where a firefight can tax his crews. While Washington Island has benefited from MABAS several times, he says the only time Washington Island firefighters have been able to return the favor was during last year’s fire that destroyed a large portion of Rowley’s Bay Resort. The fire was largely out shortly before 3:30 a.m. The fire remains under investigation, and only one injury to the homeowner was reported.
