Days before all eyes will be on Wisconsin for the Republican National Convention, its projected presidential candidate could be handed a sentence in a New York courtroom. Former President Donald Trump was found guilty on 34 counts of falsifying business records related to a $130,000 payment made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels amid his bid for the White House in 2016. According to Yahoo! News, Trump’s Lawyer Todd Blanche promised that “as soon as we can appeal, we will,” following Thursday’s verdict. Republican leaders across the country expressed their displeasure with the verdict, with House Speaker Mike Johnson calling it a “shameful day” and adding that the charges were “purely political.” The Door County Republican Party echoed those sentiments, saying, “It is a dark day for America when the justice system has been so blatantly weaponized by those in power against their political opponents.“
The Democratic Party of Kewaunee County was thankful that justice was served, crediting the jury and the presiding judge.
Both parties used the conviction as a rallying cry for their base to vote for their respective Presidential candidates and for their other candidates down the ballot. Pending an appeal, Trump is expected to be sentenced on July 11th, with the Republican National Convention beginning in Milwaukee on July 15th.
