USS Silversides arrives in Sturgeon Bay for dry dock

For the second time in the past 12 months, a World War II-era submarine disrupted traffic in downtown Sturgeon Bay.

The USS Silversides departed Muskegon, Michigan, at approximately 5:30 p.m. with the tugboats Nickelena and Erika Kobasic serving as escorts across Lake Michigan to Bay Shipbuilding, where it will undergo dry-dock repairs.

According to MLive.com, the USS Silversides' journey is its first on open water since arriving in Muskegon in 1987. During World War II, the submarine sank 23 Japanese ships, destroyed 16 sea mines and rescued two downed pilots between 1941 and 1946.

Over the next several weeks, the USS Silversides will undergo a $3.5 million restoration to help preserve it for decades to come as a maritime attraction in Muskegon. The submarine is expected to return to Muskegon in October. You can count Calvin and William Adams, who along with their mother stopped multiple times along the water to see the submarine come through their hometown.

Last year, Manitowoc's USS Cobia underwent its own dry-dock repairs at Bay Shipbuilding.
