Door County Sheriff Tammy Sternard announced her re-election bid in April, months after challengers Curt Vandertie, Carl Waterstreet and Randy Wagner announced their candidacies in January. Community conversations, parades and door-knocking efforts have allowed the candidates to spend face time with potential voters ahead of the Aug. 11 primary. Sternard will appear on the Democratic ballot, while Waterstreet and Vandertie are vying for the Republican nomination.
Sternard says the biggest issues she has heard from residents relate to scams and immigration.
Immigration has also been a topic brought up to Wagner, specifically whether the sheriff's office would assist ICE operations in the county.
Waterstreet says voters have told him they care less about campaign buzzwords and more about what the department will do for them.
Vandertie says voters want to see a more engaged sheriff, especially the first responders he has spoken with.
While only three of the four candidates are involved in next month's primary, all four hope to appear on the ballot for the Nov. 3 general election.
