High summer populations increase need at Wisconsin Humane Society

The "dog days of summer" mean something completely different at Wisconsin Humane Society campuses across the state, including those in Green Bay and Door County.

According to Wisconsin Humane Society Media Specialist Corey Viars, more than 1,300 animals are available for adoption through its facilities thanks to increased intake during the summer months. Schedule and travel changes, peak puppy and kitten season, and an influx of lost pets are all factors driving animal shelters across the country to take in more animals.

With more animals to care for, Viars says that also increases expenses for medical care, food and other necessities.

If you cannot adopt or foster an animal, there are other ways you can show your support. The Wisconsin Humane Society's Door County Campus will host its annual Pet Walk on Saturday, Aug. 8, with events beginning at 9 a.m. at the Door County YMCA's Peterson Park. You can register here.

You can also donate directly to the Wisconsin Humane Society. Thanks to a group of donors, all funds raised during August will be tripled.
