Authorities recover, identify missing kayakers

Two kayakers who went missing Saturday near Washington Island were recovered from the water Monday, ending a nearly 40-hour search.


Washington Island Police, Fire and Ambulance was called to the area at approximately 6:50 p.m. Saturday. Emergency personnel were told that the two missing kayakers, 20-year-olds David Thalman of Dundee, Illinois, and Franceska Warick of South Elgin, Illinois, went out without life jackets.


Washington Island emergency personnel conducted their own search operations until nearly 10 p.m. The U.S. Coast Guard took over from there, conducting search operations until 2:30 a.m. Sunday. The Coast Guard resumed the search at 7:30 a.m. and stopped at 10:45 a.m.


Search operations continued with the assistance of the Washington Island Fire Department, Egg Harbor Fire Department, Ephraim Fire Department, Sister Bay/Liberty Grove Fire Department, Gibraltar K-9 Search Team and Jacksonport Fire Department, along with the Gibraltar Police Department, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Door County Sheriff's Office and Door County Emergency Management.


Just before 11 a.m. Monday, Thalman's body was pulled from the water, followed by Warick's.


The incident remains under investigation by the Door County Sheriff's Office, which extended its condolences to the victims' families.
