The Kewaunee County Board is one step away from removing the sunset provision for its 0.5% county sales tax. The ordinance was previously read at the board’s July meeting, paving the way for its potential passage Tuesday when the Kewaunee County Board meets in Kewaunee.
The 0.5% sales tax was instituted by the Kewaunee County Board in 2017 and extended for another five years in 2021. The amended ordinance removes the Dec. 31, 2026, sunset date, an action required to take place at least 120 days before the original repeal date. The amended ordinance would still allow a future Kewaunee County Board to repeal the tax.
Keeping the sales tax in place would also keep Kewaunee County among the 70 Wisconsin counties that have one, with Waukesha and Winnebago counties the lone exceptions. Speaking after last month’s meeting, Kewaunee County Board Chairperson Dan Olson said that although he is not a fan of the tax, repealing it would leave a giant hole in the county’s budget.
The Kewaunee County Board will also weigh in on a petition for bridge aid in the town of Red River and the purchase of real property in the town of Casco, in addition to hearing from Finance Director Paul Kunesh, Clerk of Courts Rebecca Deterville and Administrator Jeremy Kral. Tuesday’s meeting begins at 6 p.m.
