Midsummer's Music's Berkenstock to receive Boynton Creative Spirit Award

A familiar venue for Midsummer’s Music musicians and fans will be the site of a special moment for the organization’s founder and artistic director. As part of this year’s Boynton Festival at Bjorklunden in Baileys Harbor, Lawrence University will honor Jim Berkenstock with its prestigious Winifred Boynton Creative Spirit Award.

Presented since 2017, the award honors individuals who have created something with a lasting impact on Door County. That description applies to Berkenstock, who, along with his late wife, Jean, founded Midsummer’s Music more than 30 years ago to bring chamber music to the peninsula.

That mission grew to include the Griffon String Quartet, which was created in 2018 not only to perform but also to help foster a love of chamber music in classrooms in Door and Brown counties.

The 2 p.m. award ceremony is part of a larger Boynton Festival lineup that includes mini-seminars, live music, a Door Shakespeare performance and more on Aug. 22. You can find more details about the event, including registration, at this link.
